Evaluating Peas for Cold Tolerance. (C08-malhotra727661-oral)

Abstract:

Pea (Pisum sativum L.) is one of the important cool season food legumes grown in the Mediterranean region. The advantages of a winter-sown pea compared to that of spring-sown are well documented but cold (mainly frost) damage to winter-crop is a limiting factor to high yield and stability. The present study was, therefore, undertaken to evaluate about the available pea germplasm comprising about one thousand accessions, which originated from 39 countries. The evaluation was done over a span of eight years (1990/1991 to 1999/2000) at Tel Hadya, the main research station of The International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA), Aleppo, Syria. Plantings were done earlier into the autumn in the beginning of October, and observations for cold score were recorded using a 1 to 9 scale, where 1=free from cold damage and 9= all plants killed by cold. Growing a line at least for two years did reconfirmation of tolerance. The evaluation results across years revealed that 42 lines, with cold score of 4 or less were cold tolerant. Majority of these cold tolerant lines originated from USA and Romania.
