Evolution of Turfgrass Extension in the Midwest and North Central Region. (C05- fagerness082226-Oral)

Abstract:

A web-based survey was conducted in 2002 to analyze extension programs throughout the region. All personnel with turf related extension responsibilities were included in the survey. Survey questions included basic information such as full time equivalents (FTE) in turfgrass extension to more detailed queries such as the major limitations to conducting quality research. Although not all universities have responded, the initial results from the survey have been tabulated. The average number of FTE in turfgrass extension in the north central region is 1, with a high of 1.85 and a low of 0.1.

All but one of the respondents indicated the appointment was strictly in turfgrass extension. The level of funding from state turfgrass foundations ranged from poor to excellent but most

indicated an increase in funding over time. The responses indicated the diversity of the industry as service was provided to county

agents, golf course superintendents, seed producers, sod growers, athletic field managers, and state turf foundations. Complete results from the survey will be presented.
