Abstract:

Nutrient depletion in soils adversely impacts soil quality and reduces crop yield. By distinguishing the human-induced nutrient deficit from a generic soil nutrient depletion, a simplified approach was proposed to estimate NPK budgets for wheat, rice, maize, and barley production in the year 2000 at national and global scales. Serious nutrient deficits in N, P, and K were extensively observed in these crops in both developing and least developed countries at an average rate of 19, 12, and 47 kg/ha/y, covering 58, 84, and 89% of the harvested area, respectively. Rice production was in most deficit (kg/ha/y) of 22 N, 12 P, and 49 K, accounting for 51, 92, and 94% of the harvested area, respectively, followed by wheat (16.3 N, 5.2 P, and 47 K for 67, 85, and 44%, respectively). Annual total nutrient deficit was 5.5 MMt N, 2.3 MMt P, and 12.2 MMt K. The yield decline (equivalent rice-yield, kg/ha/y) was about 670 from N, 1093 from P, and 1372 from K, leading to total production loss of 232, 539, and 455 MMt/y, respectively. The reduction of rice production due to K deficit was the severest in developing countries and wheat loss due to N and P deficits was noticeable in developed countries. The rate of human-induced nutrient depletion depends heavily on fertilizer use rate, fertilized NPK ratio, and production level, but varies largely with country and cropping system.
