My research would not have been possible without the support of three institutions: The Multiple Cropping Center of the Faculty of Agriculture, Chiang Mai University, Helvetas/Swiss Development Corporation office in Bhutan, and the Ministry of Agriculture of the Royal Government of Bhutan.
At the Multiple Cropping Center, Chiang Mai University, I am highly indebted to Associate Professor Dr. Benchaphun Ekasingh who kindly agreed to be my Academic as well as my Thesis Advisor. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to her for the most valuable and professional advice, encouragement, and guidance received throughout my stay in Chiang Mai. I would also like to take the opportunity of sincerely thanking my Thesis Committee members, Asst. Prof. Dr. Chapika Sangkapitux of the Department of Agricultural Economics, and Ajarn Phrek Gypmantasiri of MCC for their valuable comments, suggestions and time.
I would like to thank the Helvetas/SDC for the generous financial support and the Ministry of Agriculture for providing me this excellent opportunity to study in Chiang Mai, Thailand. My personal appreciation to Dr. Pema Cheophyel, Director, Council of RNR Research of Bhutan (CORRB), Dr. Lungten Norbu, Program Director, RNR-RC Yusipang without whose support I would not have availed this scholarship.
My fieldwork would not have been possible without the support of Dr. Lungten Norbu, Program Director of RNR-RC Yusipang, Chencho Dorji, Rinchen, and Padam Lal Giri. I would also like to thank DAOs of Samtse, Paro and Thimphu for their support provided in gathering field data for the study.
My friends in Chiang Mai, Kailash, Bhim, Tayan and Yadu for their help support, and guidance in making my stay here colorful. Batch 46: I learnt a lot from the many lively discussions that we had.

To my late father, I dedicate this thesis to him for his love, care, understanding and the blessings that he bestowed on me. With love to my wife, Pemma for having had to struggle with two growing up children in the house in my absence. Without her understandings I would not have been able to pursue my studies. My daughter Lhazin and son Khenrab, I am extremely sorry for being away when you needed me the most.
