Abstract

The trend of globalization has led to increased awareness of the importance of developing quality education to meet internationally-agreed standards. This is the case worldwide, including Thailand. The authors therefore deem it necessary to research and analyse the quality of Japanese language graduates from Thammasat University so as to determine whether or not these graduates meet world-class standard. Data were collected by means of questionnaires that recorded graduates’ profi ciency as measured by Levels 1 and 2 on the JLPT test. The study subjects were comprised of 102 graduates from the years 2008 and 2009.

The research showed that out of both batches of graduates, 5% of the total passed Level 1. Out of the number of graduates that entered the Level 1 test, 41.7% passed. Forty-fi ve point nine percent of the total number of graduates passed Level 2. Out of the number of graduates that entered the Level 2 test, 69.1% passed. Considering the number of study hours exceeding the minimum for Levels 1 and 2 of the JLPT test, graduates should be able to pass both levels without diffi culty. It is noted that graduates’ pre-university background knowledge of Japanese, as well as experience of life in Japan, are likely factors relating to the graduates’

pass rates. Recommendations are made for further, more detailed research and analysis of course content in order to determine whether or not, and to what extent, it corresponds with the content of the internationally-recognized JLPT test.
