Abstract:

Field studies were conducted for three years at two locations in Illinois to evaluate the impact of

nitrogen management on alternative wheat types to soft red winter wheat (SRW). Two varieties each of soft white winter (SWW), hard red winter (HRW) and hard white winter (HWW) wheat were

evaluated and compared to high yielding SRW varieties. Nitrogen (N) management treatments included a comparison of N sources of ammonium nitrate, ammonium sulfate and liquid UAN combined with spring-split N timings of application. On average over all three years and two locations, the SWW varieties had the highest yield of any wheat type and equal test weights to the SRW, although test weights were lower than the HRW and HWW. Milling and baking quality results indicate some possible problems with each of the wheat types. Averaged across all three years and both locations, the SWW, SRW, HRW and HWW varieties yielded 3790, 3924, 3273, and 3441 kg ha-1 (56.4, 58.4, 48.7, and 51.2 bu acre-1), respectively. Comparisons of nitrogen sources had a slight yield disadvantage and slightly lower flour protein for UAN, but higher milling quality. There were no significant effects on test weights of these wheat types. Spring-split N applications had no significant effect on yield, test weight, or any of the milling and baking quality tests.
