Abstract:
Site specific weed management requires the identification of crop and weed species in mixture. Since reflectance of crop and weed differs in the visual and near infrared wavelength region, it is possible to identify signatures that can be used to separate the species in mixtures. Reflectance spectra were used for detection of cheat and ryegrass in winter what in greenhouse circumstances. Experiments were conducted in December 2002 at the Agronomy Research Station, Oklahoma State University. Seven levels of individual and combination of 3-plant species (cheat, ryegrass and wheat) were arranged in completely randomized design with three replications. The spectral readings were averaged into 10 nm band widths for wavelengths 400-865. Using discriminant analysis procedure, reflectance from three wavelength ratios (w715/w555, w855/675 and w685/815) and two average wavelengths (w715 and w755) were selected to classify the three species and their combination. In most instances, ryegrass was classified as either cheat or wheat while cheat was classified as rye. Cheat was not classified as wheat in any of the instances.
