Abstract:
In 1993, the College of Agricultural Sciences at Oregon State University (OSU) proposed the development of extension working groups to bring together extension faculty from across the state working in a specific activity area. One such group, and one of the few still active, is the Dryland Cropping Systems group. This group includes extension faculty from seven counties, an experiment station and the OSU campus. The group has focused its activity on cooperative on-farm demonstration and research plots, publications addressing dryland cropping system needs and findings, and group learning experiences. The group meets at least twice annually and each year since its inception, has spent typically two but as many as seven days touring innovative farms and agricultural facilities in group member counties,
elsewhere in the state or region, and one year took a trip to CIMMYT in Mexico.
These meetings and annual trips have spawned numerous ideas that have led to innovations in group member counties or the region. Members have often found that a single idea or contact made through participation in the group tour has made the time commitment worthwhile. The synergy of a long-standing group is also a powerful tool in seeking needed resources and in quickly informing and providing a support group for new faculty.
