Abstract:

The Prairie PhD is a cohort graduate education program designed to meet the unique needs of tribal college faculty, and reservation agriculture, food systems, and natural resource professionals. Students can choose either Master’s or PhD options, with coursework and research leading to degrees in Biological Sciences; specialization options include: Animal and Range Sciences, Plant Science, Human Nutrition and Food Science, and Wildlife Sciences. Courses will be taught by faculty from South Dakota State University and faculty from a consortium of participating tribal colleges. Delivery methods will include short courses offered at Brookings and in reservation communities, along with classes via interactive television, and Internet. The orientation course will be an introduction to Lakota views of environmental management and will be offered to students and faculty participating in the program. The program will help build capacity and develop human capital in agriculture, food systems and natural resources for reservation communities across the region.
