Proving p p →q → q

Direct Proof

Proof by Contraposition

Show that if p is true, q must be true.

p → q ≡ ¬q → ¬p Show that if ¬q is true, ¬p must be true.

Proof by Contradiction Proof by Contradiction

• Proof by Contradiction

– Suppose we want to prove a statement s – Start by assuming ¬ s is true.

– Show that ¬ s implies a contradiction. ( ¬ s → F) – Then, ¬ s must be false (or s must be true).

Proof p p → → q q by Contradiction by Contradiction

• Proof by Contradiction

– Start by assuming ¬ (p→q) is true.

– That means p ∧ ¬ q is true.

(since ¬ (p → q) ≡ ¬ ( ¬ p ∨ q) ≡ p ∧ ¬ q ) – Show that p ∧ ¬ q is a contradiction – Then, ¬ (p→q) must be false

(or (p→q) must be true).

• Example:

Show that |xy| = |x||y|, where x and y are real numbers.

Proof of

Proof of p p ↔ ↔ q q

• Since ( p↔q ) ↔ ( p→q ) ∧ ( q→p ), then prove both p→q and q→p

• Equivalent propositions (p 1 ↔ p 2 ↔ … ↔ p n ) are proven by proving p 1 →p 2 , p 2 →p 3 , …, p n →p 1

Equivalent Propositions Equivalent Propositions

• Example

Show that these statements are equivalent:

p 1 : n is an even integer.

p 2 : n -1 is an odd integer.

p 3 : n 2 is an even integer.

• Existence proofs: A proof of ∃xP(x)

• Constructive existence proof:

– Find an element c such that P(c) is true.

• Non-constructive existence proof:

– Do not find an element c such that P(c) is true, but use some other ways.
