Abstract:

Greenhouse trials were conducted in 2002 to determine the response of glyphosate tolerant fine and tall fescue to glyphosate. Treatments ranged from 0 to 1.57 kg ai/ha. No difference in biomass reduction was observed between glyphosate tolerant and non-tolerant Tomahawk tall fescue. Glyphosate tolerant Tomahawk tall fescue was more tolerant to high rates of glyphosate. Applications of 1.57 kg/ha caused 15% less injury than observed on the non-tolerant variety. Glyphosate tolerant Aurora Gold fine fescue had less than 20% injury to application rates of 0.37 kg/ha or less, while the non-tolerant variety Intrigue had greater than 40% injury to applications of 0.18 kg/ha or greater. Significantly less biomass reduction was observed on Aurora Gold at lower rates than on Intrigue. Field trials were conducted in NJ to compare the response of glyphosate tolerant fine and tall fescue to applications of glyphosate.

Treatments ranged from 0 to 0.74 kg/ha. No difference in injury was observed between the glyphosate tolerant and non-tolerant Tomahawk tall fescue. Glyphosate tolerant Aurora Gold fine fescue had less than 24% injury to applications of 0.37 kg/ha or less. Non-tolerant Pure Gold and Intrigue fine fescue had greater than 30% injury to applications of 0.18 kg/ha or greater. Results show that Aurora Gold fine fescue is tolerant of up to 0.37 kg/ha without significant injury.
