Abstract:
Roundup® Ready creeping bentgrass (Agrostis stolonifera L.) (RRCB) may provide a management tool to prevent Poa annua infestation in putting greens and fairways. The objective of this study was to determine the best timing for application of Roundup® (glyphosate) during conversion to RRCB. This study was conducted on a ‘Penncross’ creeping bentgrass green and on fairway areas of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.), Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) and ‘Trueline’ creeping bentgrass. One plot in each replication was stripped of sod and RRCB was seeded into bare soil.
Remaining plots were core aerified, verticut, and overseeded with RRCB. All areas were seeded on 3 Sept. 2002. Treatments included applications of 593 g a.i. ha-1 glyphosate at intervals before and after seeding. Results indicate that the best timing of glyphosate application for fairway conversion to RRCB is one week before seeding. Applications after the time of seeding resulted in competition between RRCB and established turf, thereby increasing the time required to achieve full cover of RRCB. It was determined that conversion of fairway areas could be achieved with minimal disruption to golf course operations. Conversion of greens using these methods, however, would require that the area remain closed for several weeks after seeding.
