Computation has always been an essential component of biological research, whether in the forms of simple comparison of characteristics between sample populations or complex modeling of the evolutionary process. However, it wasnt until 2000s after the completion of human genome project and the emergence of high-throughput DNA sequencing technology that the field of computational biology became so widely recognized and gradually matured into an established area of study and research. In this talk, we will examine core principles behind computational biology and, through selected research examples, explore how com- putational scientists can productively collaborate with life scientists to make meaningful contributions to this popular interdisciplinary field.
