Abstract:
The Spokane County Soil Survey (c. 1968) is currently being updated and slated to be finished in 2007. As a subset project, Fairchild AFB contracted with the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) to produce a soil survey for the Base at a scale of 1:12,000. The mapping effort by NRCS included the main installation (~4500 acres) as well as a few off site locations. Traditional soil mapping
techniques were used such as aerial photo interpretation, auguring, and backhoe pits. In addition, various GIS techniques were used to aid in the preliminary
delineation of soil map units. As a result of these efforts, a specialized, tailored soil survey for Fairchild has been produced including a traditional paper edition as well as a digital soil survey which can be incorporated into Fairchild's existing GIS.
Included in this survey are the traditional interpretations such as potential natural vegetation, soil properties (chemical and physical), and woodland/grass production, but this survey also includes specialized interpretations for Fairchild's Habitat Management Units (HMUs). Additionally, special interpretations were made for other sensitive areas such as the vernal pools, and the mound and swale topography where the federally listed endangered Spalding's catchfly is found. Fairchild AFB realizes the importance of quality soil information and integrates where possible soil data in their planning efforts.
