Abstract:

Mid-July to early September drought is a major yield limitation factor for soybean [Glycine max. (L) Merr.] in the Midsouth. The ultra-short season production system (USSPS), which uses maturity group (MG) 00 through I cultivars with April planting, may minimize severe yield reduction by the drought.

Our objective was to evaluate MG 00 through I lines for their yield potential and seed quality. A total of 42 lines from MG 00 through I cultivars were planted in late April under irrigated and dryland

conditions at Fayetteville, AR in 2002. Average yields of MG 00, 0 and I were 3473, 4361, and 4612 kg ha-1, respectively under irrigated condition. Average yields under dryland condition were significantly lower than under irrigated condition, however some lines yielded greater than Arkansas state average (1948 kg ha-1). Large variations in seed germination rates among lines were observed and germination rates were lower in dryland than in irrigated condition. Seed infections by fungi were minimal for all cultivars, however Alternaria infection appeared to be frequent in MG 00 and purple seed stain seemed to increase as MG increased. These results show the potential of USSPS to produce a viable crop in 79-100 days in the mid-south under both irrigated and dryland conditions.
