Between 1870 and 1900, nearly 12 million immigrants came to the United States. The majority came from Germany, Ireland, and, England. 31 At first, they were attracted to North America by the gold rush in California and many looked for gold on their own or worked for other miners. After the gold rush, some Chinese immigrants worked as agricultural laborers, with railroad construction crews throughout the West, and at low-paying industrial jobs. 32

Later, with the beginning of difficult economic times in the 1870s, other immigrants and European Americans began to compete for jobs originally reserved for the Chinese. 33 Many European Americans called for the Chinese immigrants to be kicked out of the United States. The result was the Chinese Exclusion Act, passed by Congress in 1882. This piece of legislation prevented any more Chinese immigration to the United States for almost the next 100 years.

34 Over the years, many Chinese Americans have blended the American lifestyle with a Chinese one, furthering the meaning of the United States being a country that features almost every culture from around the world.

第39至42題為題組

Hydroponics is the science of growing plants without soil, in liquid solutions. Why would we want to grow things without soil? Well, it is usually because there isn't any!

For example, one American airline used hydroponics techniques in the 1930s to grow vegetables on a rocky island that had no soil. Airplanes flying from the USA to Guam and back again had to stop on the island, and the passengers had to be kept supplied with fresh vegetables.

Space is another area where hydroponics could be useful. NASA has shown great interest in this field of research. Of course, growing plants in a conventional way is very difficult on a spacecraft, and would be even more difficult on another planet! NASA hopes that one day hydroponics will allow astronauts to grow their own food while they are in space and perhaps even establish colonies on the moon or Mars.

It's not just in space or remote islands that hydroponics can be useful, however. One American company is using hydroponics techniques to build rooftop gardens on large buildings inside major cities. This could help tackle the problem of global food shortages. What's more, because the food does not have to be transported over long distances, it is cheaper and fresher!

As the examples above indicate, hydroponics is a fascinating branch of scientific research that may bring us many benefits in the future.
