Left sores and infections unnoticed or untreated, nerve damage can lead to serious foot problems, such as amputation. The potential of amputation in the diabetic population is 15 times that of the nondiabetic population. However, 75% of amputation is avoidable. As stated above, foot care is critical with diabetes.. B. How can diabetes affect my feet? High blood sugar levels over time can cause nerve damage and circulation problems. It can also lessen your ability to feel pain, heat, and cold, so you might injure it without knowing. Furthermore, poor circulation can lead to infection or ulcer, eventually amputation as a result. So it’s best to avoid them.. (2) C. How to protect your feet? (a) Wash your feet with mild soap every day. Test water temperature with elbow. Dry them carefully, especially between the toes. (b) Rub a thin coat of skin lotion or baby oil to prevent dry skin. (c) Trim your toenails straight across with an emery board or nail file. (d) Check them every day for sores and cuts in bright area by your eyes, if you are not able to see them clearly, ask your family to help. (e) Wear soft, flat shoes that fit well. (f) Check your shoes for foreign objects before putting them on. (g) Proper activity to improve blood circulation on your feet, such as walking. (h) Regular follow up to let your doctor check your feet periodically.. D. Attention to prevent skin problem: (a) Don’t let your feet immerse in hot water, or use hot water bag, or even get close to electric blanket and heater. (b) Don’t over trim your toe nails. (c) Never walk barefoot or put on slippers to for outdoor activities. (d) Don't kick objects. (e) Don't cross your legs.. (3) (f) Don't wear trousers and socks that are too tight. Socks that have no seams are the best. (g) Don't cut corns and calluses by yourself. (h) See a doctor right away if you get any wound. Don’t use medicine by yourself. (i) Don't smoke.. (4)
