Investigation of the Current Internship Program for Students in Nutrition-Related Fields in a Medical Center

ABSTRACT:
This research focused on students in nutrition-related fields undertaking an internship in the nutrition department of a medical center, the aim of which was to understand the relationship between their exam scores achieved in college and their scores received during their internship. In addition, this study also collected information about the students’
satisfaction levels and their thoughts on the environment in which they completed their internship, information that the college and the nutrition department of the medical center can then use to improve the nutrition teaching plan and draw up an internship program.
This was a data retrieval study involving the collection of data on nutrition student interns from the internship system of a medical center. By analyzing the data retrieved from 2004–2007, a total of 90 internship students in the medical center were included in this study. The results indicate that there is a correlation between students’ college scores and their scores on the internship program. Most students feel that the internship program is very intensive, and would like the time spent on the nutrition course to be reduced and the amount of practical training in special wards to be increased. In general, the students are very satisfied with the internship program; the average satisfaction score is 88.8±5.5, suggesting that the students rate this internship program highly.
