First conditional sentences

Emma and Bruce arrived on Legend Island. They are meeting with Chase and Faye, the famous superhero duo.

A. Bruce and Emma are at Chase’s school. They are talking to some of the students. Underline the conditional clauses in the sentences.

e.g. If I become a reporter, I will interview Chase and Faye.

1. Davy will catch all the bad people if he becomes a policeman.

2. Chase will save you if you are in danger.

3. If there is a typhoon, I will stay at home.

4. The doctor will give me some medicine if I am sick.

5. I will not pass next week’s exam if I do not study hard.

Pattern 1 – start the sentence with ‘if’

If I become a flight attendant, I will travel the world.

• future condition (simple present)

• This has to happen first.

• future result (future tense)

• Then this will happen.

Pattern 2 – put ‘if’ in the middle

I will take many photos if I become a photographer.

• future result (future tense)

• This will happen.

• future condition (simple present)

• If this happens first.

We use ‘If … will …’ to talk about things that have a good chance of happening.
