Executive Summary

Summarize, in a page or less, the main reasons for performing the design project and the extent of the design your team wants to accomplish. Typically, all the sentences of the Executive Summary are drawn from the sections that follow. The Executive Summary gives, the reader, an overview of what the design project needs are and what design is being proposed to fulfill those needs. This section is the most comprehensively read section of the document because of its content and setting. Therefore this section should be well written and carefully checked for errors.

This section may be written after completing the whole proposal.

Headings of sections are 14 points, flush left, and boldfaced. Use initial capitals. To preserve hierarchy, allow two line skips before the heading and one line skip after. For a persuasive document, such as a proposal or formal report, paragraphs should average about 6-10 lines. You may have an occasional short paragraph (fewer than 6 lines) and an

occasional long paragraph (11-15 lines). Be careful about having paragraphs that go more than 15 lines.

Indent all paragraphs. All major book publishers in engineering and science indent paragraphs. You should do so as well, unless the output form of the document, such as email or the Web does not support a paragraph indent. Also, you may place 6 points between paragraphs as done in this template, but do not place more spacing than that. Too much vertical spacing between paragraphs upsets the visual hierarchy for the headings and subheadings.

Problem Statement

The problem statement provided to you may be copied here.

Problem Identification / Literature Review

You will establish the need for your design in this section. The advisor of your project understands the need, but the real audience is not yet convinced that you fully understand the need. In this section, you will make assertions (statements without support) about the problems that have triggered (initiated) the design you are doing. In your senior design course, those problems will range from reducing pollution, to helping handicapped of older people in the assisted housing (نيقوعملا تويب (, to flood warnings, to improving the stability of power systems. Do not just make the assertions—rather, back up your

statements with evidence. That evidence generally will be references from articles or books that are well recognized and respected. The evidence could also be surveys or testimonies (the statements or declarations of witnesses under oath) of users.

(You have to ask the following questions from the faculty advisor: ______) 1. Why is it important to solve this problem?

2. What kind of solutions to this problem are already available?

3. What are the assumptions before solving this problem?

4. Under what constraints this problem needs to be solved?

5. What are a few resources to look at for the solution of this problem?

After getting the response of the faculty to these questions, you as a team need to write at least two paragraphs of literature (internet / journal/book) review

You need to write about customer needs by interacting (asking questions) with the faculty advisor / doing research and provide some statistics such that it is clear that the problem that you are working on need attention. You must establish the need of the project you would like to work on.

(5)

Problem Definition

You need to write a paragraph about the project. What are you and your team members planning to do in this project to solve the problem written in the Problem statement.

In this section, you set up the problem or problems, to prepare the reader, without discussing the proposed design solutions. The reader will know the proposed design solutions in the following sections.

Please indent all paragraphs and do not skip a line between paragraphs in the same section or subsection.

Objectives

This document recommendshere you formally state your design proposal.

Normally, the design has two to four definite objectives. You might consider listing them vertically as follows:

(1) first design objective,

(2) second design objective, and (3) third design objective.

The vertical listing of objectives make it easier to find them if the reader return to this section to review those objectives. . If your design objectives are complicated and depend on variables, then you may place them in the form of a table.

In this section, you would discuss in detail what you mean by the different design objectives. You would discuss what you intend to do to achieve those objectives. You will also give justification of what you will not do that your audience might assume. You might consider writing a paragraph for each objective. Please indent all paragraphs and do not skip a line between paragraphs in the same section or subsection. However, feel free to insert up to 6 points between paragraphs, as is done in this template.

You may place the Mission Statement in this section. The format of the mission statement may be as follows:

(6)

Note that if “Problem Statement” section is done very good, then all the design objectives should be clear to the audience. Do not have more than four objectives. Lists of more than four are often not read. Please indent all paragraphs and do not skip a line between paragraphs in the same section or subsection.

(7)

Project Design and Action Plan

Discusses in this section how you will obtain the objectives presented in the previous section. This plan should follow a logical sequence. Please make sure that you have a transition paragraph between the heading “Project Design and Action Plan” and the subheading “ Gathering Information Identifying Customer Needs.”

This is an example:

This section describes our plan of achieving the previously outlined objectives. We will basically follow the engineering design process explained during the class lectures and outlined in the books [1], [2]. The steps of this process include identifying customers' needs, identifying associated standards and target specifications, concepts (solutions) generation, taking a course of action (concept selection), plan for demonstration of outcomes achievement, project management, scope of work, deliverables, budget, presentation of results and communication with the project advisor/sponsor, and team expertise and qualifications.

Gathering Information and Identifying Needs of Customers

Here you would insert paragraphs that explain how will (in future before the implementation of the project) your team gathers information and how will (in future) you team identify the needs of the customer. Please indent all paragraphs and do not skip a line between paragraphs in the same section or subsection.

Identifying Associated Standards and Developing Target Specifications

Here you would explain in a few paragraphs how will (in future) you team identify target specifications keeping in mind the associated standards and compliance. Write how you team will identify the standards associated with your project. Please indent all

paragraphs and do not skip a line between paragraphs in the same section or subsection.

(8)
