Biomaterial Division 1- Course Name and Cod Number
Biomaterial CDS 333
2- Division Head:
Prof. Mohamed M. Shehata
3- Course Director:
Dr. Dalia A. Abu-elenain
4- Course Description:
The science of dental materials involves a study of the composition and properties of materials and the way in which they interact with the environment in which they are placed. The selection of materials for any given application can thus be undertaken with confidence and sound judgment.
This course is meant to teach the student of dentistry aspects of material science necessary to enable him to understand and continue to learn dental biomaterials. The latter being an imperative foundation for proper clinical dental practice.
5- Research and Educational Goal
The primary goals of the Division of Biomaterials science are to:
Conduct basic science and applied dental materials
Train undergraduate students in research methodology and new dental technology.
Educate dental students with respect to novel materials and procedures that may improve patient care.
6- Course Objectives
a. Upon completion of this course, the students will have a working knowledge of the nature, structure, and properties of metals, polymers, and ceramics as they apply to dental practice.
b. The students will be able to justify selection of the most appropriate materials possessing the physical properties that are suitable for a particular functional situation.
c. The students will be able to explain the underlying principles for the strengthening of materials, and the need for specific laboratory and clinical manipulation.
d. The student will be capable of rationally consider new dental materials as they are developed during his/her professional career.
