A Welcome Letter to Interns
Intern, welcome!
Congratulations on reaching this most exciting stage in your life!
We hope you will have a rewarding and successful internship year. Our program is designed to facilitate the professional growth of interns who are in the process of becoming practicing cardiac technologist. The goals of the internship year include assisting the intern to become more skilled in the breadth and techniques of assessment and intervention with cardiac patients. The primary goal is to enable you to gain the experience you need in order to become a better intern in just a few short months.
This manual contains information on what the expectations are for an Acting Intern, how you will be evaluated, and what the overall goals of the experience are. You can also review the evaluation form that will be used by your attending at the end of the rotation. You will see that the evaluation is specific, and related to the skills that make an intern different from a fourth year cardiac technologist student. You will be expected to organize your day, interpret tests, make management decisions, and become a more self-directed learner.
Sincerely.

Program description
Introduction
Cardiac technology is an allied health profession specifically focused on the diagnosis and management of patients with cardiac and vascular disease. Cardiac technology specialist ( CTS ) is highly skilled professional qualified to provide patient services using diagnostic ultrasound ,ECG, and stress testing under the supervision of the cardiologist to gather data necessary to aid in the diagnosis and management of patients with cardiovascular disorders. Invasive CTS also assists the interventional cardiologist in performing different diagnostic and therapeutic invasive procedures in the cardiac catheterization laboratory.
Professional aims:
-
To prepare qualified students with the best training, and clinical experience leading to Academic certification as a cardiac technology specialist with the highest quality.
- To graduate qualified students to meet the increasing demand for competent cardiac technology specialist within the Kingdom by providing quality focused programs of education in cardiac technology.
- To establish, maintain and promote appropriate educational
standards of quality for programs in Cardiac Technology and to
6 | P a g e
achieve recognition as an educational program meeting the highest standards.
- To provide competency-based education through an appropriate balance between theoretical, professional, ethical concepts and clinical practice in order to prepare graduates for the world of work and life-long learning.
- To utilize a variety of creative/innovative teaching strategies that will meet the individual and varied learning needs of the students to graduate dependable, responsible, and competent students.
- To create an environment that simulates the workplace by maintaining current laboratory facilities, equipment, and internship opportunities.
Curriculum
The Cardiac Technology Program at the College of Applied Medical Science in the University of Dammam is a pioneer program not only in the kingdom but also in the Middle East. It is a four-year course of study (142 credit hours) followed by one year internship leading to a Cardiac Technology Specialists.
Students will learn both the theoretical concepts and clinical application of cardiac technology through a broad spectrum of courses and techniques.
The curriculum will cover eight regular semesters, and to join the
fourth year of the program, students should complete and finish eight-
7 | P a g e
week in-hospital summer training (8 credit hours) between the third and fourth year of the study.
Cardiac technologists will be able to select between two areas of subspecialties: invasive technology (cardiac catheterization),or noninvasive technology ( echocardiography ) .

Internship program description
Introduction :
Following the completion of the study program, the student will spend one year of training in King Fahd university hospital and other recognized hospitals. The internship will be designed to provide the student with the opportunity to integrate knowledge, behaviors, and professional attributes
acquired throughout the curriculum that are necessary to the practice of cardiac technology. While at training hospitals, the student will be involved in developing insight, understanding , and skill in cardiac technology. The students will be exposed to invasive and non-invasive cardiovascular procedures
A-Invasive procedures
Professional Knowledge (PK)
- Exposure to cardiac catheterization procedures and interventions, with hands-on training and didactic instruction - Understand the dynamics and workflow of a Cardiac
Catheterization Laboratory
- Demonstrate knowledge of procedures performed in the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory, including left and right heart catheterizations, and interventional procedures
- Become familiar with equipment used in the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory, including Hemochron unit for activated clotting times (ACT), oximeter unit for O2 saturations, contrast injector, intra-aortic balloon pump unit, pressure wire system, intra-vascular or intra-coronary ultrasound, biphasic defibrillation units, and additional equipment needed to perform a procedure
18 | P a g e
Professional Skills (PS)
• Observe and understand the pre- and post-procedure care given to the cardiovascular patient
• Understand and have respect for the patient’s needs/rights before, during, and after a cardiac catheterization procedure
• Demonstrate the skills necessary to function as a circulator, recorder, and scrub assistant
• Gain further understanding of the skills necessary to work as a competent cardiovascular technologist
B- Non-invasive procedures
Noninvasive Cardiovascular Technology is an allied health profession specifically concerning the diagnosis and treatment of patients with cardiovascular disease. The technologist performs examinations at the request or direction of a physician. Through subjective sampling and/or recording, the technologist proceeds with the examination to create an easily definable foundation of data from which a correct anatomic and physiologic diagnosis may be established for each patient.
The primary role of the noninvasive cardiovascular technologist is to obtain recordings of ultrasound images of the heart and related structures for the physician to interpret. The various types of ultrasound equipment require a highly skilled operator to obtain the imaging information or other data required. The noninvasive cardiovascular technologist must obtain appropriate clinical history, cardiac-related physical findings, and pertinent laboratory data in order to adapt the imaging techniques to obtain comprehensive and diagnostic echocardiographic information.
Professional Attitudes, Behaviors and Cultural Competencies (PA)
• Display a positive attitude and ability to work as a team member
• Exhibit professional interpersonal communication with other team members and patients

INTERNSHIP PERFORMANCE EVALUATION FORM
Name of Intern: ……….……..
Training Institution: ………
Date: From To
Preceptor:………...
Faculty Supervisor: ……….……….…………
DIRECTIONS:
The Internship Performance Evaluation Form is a rating scheme based on performance objectives. It provides a set of behavioral criteria as outcomes expected of the intern. The set of behavioral criterion is further categorized into:(1) Knowledge of Work; (2) Working Abilities; and (3) General Conduct. A corresponding rating of P- Poor, G-Good, VG-Very Good, and E-Excellent accompany each behavioral criterion.
It is expected that a remark be written corresponding to every performance objective rating. Qualifying statements should otherwise accompany any poor or excellent performance of the intern. This could further be emphasized on the additional comments section of the form. The form is done once and only at the end of the prescribed internship-training period and would therefore reflect the over-all performance of the intern being evaluated.
This form should be CONFIDENTIAL and must be returned on a sealed official envelope of the Department of Cardiac Technology.
