What is “Academic Writing”?
• Refers to a particular style of expression that researchers use to
define the intellectual boundaries of their disciplines and their areas of expertise.
• A style of writing governed by rules and practices such as a formal
structure and order, citations for research to support ideas, and the use of correct spelling, grammar and punctuation. A formal tone is also
necessary.
Types of Scientific Literature
(Academic Writing)
1. Research article
Scientific paper that is written and published describing original research results. Most often peer reviewed.
2. Review article
It is also published in peer
reviewed journals, but seek to
synthesize and summarize the work of a particular sub-field. Review articles often lack the “Materials and Methods” section.
3. Editorials/Opinion
An article expressing the
authors view about a particular issue
4. Conference Long papers
Conferences are the second major form of formal communication among scientists. A group of scientists gather to present findings about their research

More often, the research presented as posters at a conference
6. Research Proposal
For applying for funds7. Assignments
Scientific reports/Lab Assignment8. Thesis / Dissertations
These are the final products that result from research conducted for a PhD or a Masters degree. These items can often be very long, going into great detail about methods and with lots of appendices of data.
