Specific objectives for each lecture

A- Course outlines for the 1st term:

1- Introduction to the course (Revision on diagnosis, treatment plan & file writing) 1.1- Understand the main goal of this course, related topics, clinical requirements and marks distribution

1.2- Be familiar with a proper statement for the clinical diagnosis of hard dental tissue problems such as caries, stain, plasia …ect

1.3- Revise the sequentially formulated treatment plan & writing the patient’s file documents

2- Role of diet in caries incidence

2.1- Understand the role of diet from a historical perspective

2.2- Know the epidemiological and classical historical studies which provided evidence of

sugar consumption leading to dental caries.

2.3- Know sources of carbohydrates and sugars as well as the available sugar substitutes

2.4- Know protective food items

2.5- Be able to counsel patients regarding their diet habits

3- Root caries

3.1- Define root caries

3.2- Differentiate between root & coronal caries clinically

3.3- Identify the aetiology, clinical appearance, location, histopathology, microbiology,

prevalence, incidence & risk factors

3.4- Understand steps applied in diagnosis of root caries

3.5- Summarise the preventive & chemotherapeutic strategies adopted in root caries prevention.

3.6- Conclude the challenges encountered in restoring root carious lesion

3.7- Differentiate between the materials used to restore root carious lesions & their selection

according to the clinical situation

4- Glass ionomer clinical application

4.1- Revise the chemistry and setting reactions of glass ionomer (GI)

4.2- Be able to Identify, classify & distinguish between different types of glass ionmers

(Conventional GI, Resin modified GI, Compomer i.e. poly acid modified composites)

4.3- Identify advantages, disadvantages, indications, contraindications, & properties of

various types of glass ionomers

4.4- Master the clinical manipulation and application of different types of glass ionomer

5- Tooth surface loss (wear)

5.1- Define attrition, bruxism & different types of wear

5.2- Be able to identify clinical wear of tooth structure & restorations 5.3- Be familiar with different restorative managements of worn dentition.

5.4- Understand causes, signs & symptoms of bruxism

5.5- Be able to know the reasons for being bruxist as well as the nature of the associated

pain & teeth grinding

5.6- Know how to diagnose, prevent and treat bruxism using teeth grinding mouth guard

6- Non-carious cervical lesions & restorative management

6.1- Define non-carious cervical lesions (NCCL); cervical erosion, abrasion, &

abfraction.

6.2- Identify the etiological causes of non-carious cervical lesions.

6.3- Differentiate between various clinical features of non-carious cervical lesions.

6.4- Explain the treatment strategies applied to treat non-carious cervical lesions and the

type of the restorative material.

7- Restorations of vital-mutilated teeth

7.1- Be able to formulate a treatment strategy & determine type of restoratives needed for

different clinical presentations of mutilated anterior &/or posterior teeth 7.2- Be familiar with the treatment options for anterior mutilated teeth such as:

7.2.1-Tooth coloured restorations & foundation (types, indications &

contraindications) - Resin- modified GI

- Composite build up with celluloid crown - PFM & all ceramic crowns

7.3- Be familiar with the treatment options for posterior mutilated teeth such as:

7.3.1- Metallic coloured restoration & foundation - Complex amalgam restorations

(occlusal step, box form, cove, lock, circumferential slot, amalgapin, pin, bonded)

7.3.2- Define Inlay/Onlay - Gold Inlay/Onlay

- Esthetic posterior restorations 7.3.3- PFM & all ceramic crowns

8- Pin-retained restorations

8.1- Be familiar that he dentin is the best anchorage medium

8.2- Understand the types, sizes, numbers and best localizations of pins

8.3- List the indication, contraindications, advantages, and disadvantages of pins 8.4- Discuss the procedures of pin placement technique

8.5- Define the trouble shootings during pins placement into tooth structure 9- Bonded amalgam restoration

9.1- Understand procedures for bonded amalgam restoration

9.2- Be familiar with the types of the bonding agents used for the bonded amalgam restorations

9.3- Identify the nature and magnitude of the bond between resin and amalgam 9.4- Conclude both the pros and cons of the bonded amalgam restorations

10- Indirect posterior restorations (composite porcelain & CAD/CAM)

10.1- Be able to understand the selection criteria for a clinical case chosen for indirect aesthetic posterior restorations as well as their indications & contraindications.

10.2- Determine the general features of the cavity design principle for indirect aesthetic

posterior restorations.

10.3- Understand different techniques modalities for fabrication of composite Inlay/Onlay

(direct, semi-direct, indirect-lab) & their advantages-disadvantages.

10.4- Understand different techniques modalities for fabrication of ceramic Inlay/Onlay

(indirect- lab & CAD/CAM) & their advantages-disadvantages.

10.5- Identify types of the materials that are used in the fabrication of both composite

&

ceramic Inlay/Onlay.

10.6- Understand the mode of adhesion & their cementation technique with resin cement.

10.7- Summarise general considerations related to their maintenance, longevity &

types of failure.

B- Coure outlines for the 2nd term:

11- Tooth hypersensitivity & management

11.1- Be familiar with definition, aetiology & prevalence of tooth hypersensitivity 11.2- Explain the mechanism of dentine hypersensitivity

11.3- Understand different diagnostic measures for tooth hypersensitivity

11.4- Differentiate between pain caused by tooth hypersensitivity and other dental pains

resulted from other factors

11.5- Be able to understand different treatment modalities (home & in-office) to control &

mange tooth hypersensitivity

12- Cracked tooth syndrome

12.1- Define this type of syndrome and its cause

12.2- Be able to classify different category of cracked teeth

12.3- Differentiate between pain caused by the cracked tooth and other types of tooth ache

12.4- Be able to understand how to diagnose the cracked tooth clinically, radiographically

and using other diagnostic tools

12.5- Describe different treatment modalities according to the severity of the crack 13- Occlusion in operative dentistry

13.1- Be familiar with the ideal occlusion characteristics

13.3- Understand the rationale & role of restoring the damaged or carious teeth in order to re-

establish the ideal occlusion

14.3- Distinguish between different bleaching agents used for tooth bleaching techniques

14.4- Be familiar and can differentiate between different techniques of bleaching therapy

14.5- Summarize the factors affecting In-office and At- home bleaching processes 14.6- List the indications and contraindications of tooth bleaching

14.7- Identify the effects of bleaching agents on the restoratives

14.8- Enumerate the alternative managements to tooth bleaching therapy 14.9- Describe different strategies applied in management of discoloured teeth 14.10- Define enamel micro- and macro-abrasion therapy for discoloured teeth

15- Aesthetic consideration in operative dentistry

15.1- Be familiar with the ideal smile (Golden proportion), tooth shape, position, and size

15.2- Be able to discuss the aesthetics parameters & define the terminology of face height, lip

line, symmetry, incisal plane, occlusal plane, buccal corridor as well as their relation &

role to obtain a good aesthetics

15.3- Understand the different treatment modalities for maligned teeth according to the

severity of the condition

15.4- Define selective grinding and enameloplasty, indications, contraindications and procedures

15.5- Describe the procedures for Diastema closure taking in consideration the size of the gap

between teeth

15.6- Enumerate the indications, contraindications, advantages, and disadvantages of both

direct resin veneer and porcelain veneer

15.7- Understand the clinical procedures of both aesthetics veneer techniques including the

final resin cementation 16- Failure of the restoration

16.1- Define the main causes of restoratives failure

18- Light cure technology & modes of curing 18.1- Overview of resin polymerization mechanism
