B. Objectives

1. What is the main purpose for this course?

The main purpose of this course in Mathematics for Business is to introduce the student to the mathematics of business and finance. The focus is on identifying and graphing different types of functions, solving linear and quadratic equations and inequalities, solving systems of linear equations, performing operations on exponential and logarithmic expressions, using integration and differentiation, computing interest, calculating the future value of a principal under annual compounding and becoming competent at symbolic manipulation of relevant equations and expressions pertaining to the mathematics of business applications. Another emphasis is on obtaining skills in using computer software to assist in the formulation, analysis of, and solution of real problems. The goal is to provide the student with a set of tools to acquire the ability to read, write, listen to and speak mathematics within the framework of a business context. The student will leave the course with a basic understanding of how to manipulate mathematics in different business applications.

2. Briefly describe any plans for developing and improving the course that are being implemented.

(e.g. increased use of IT or web based reference material, changes in content as a result of new research in the field)

Interactive learning in class is applied. Students are given projects in which they investigate real-world situations, analyze data, develop solutions, write reports and present results in class. The use of software such as Excel is encouraged and the final results are delivered in class by the students through PowerPoint presentations. Discussions follow each presentation and the teacher concludes by reviewing some of the techniques used by the students in their projects.

That includes knowledge of concepts in percentages, interest, indices, inflation, supply and demand analysis, national income, elasticity and all associated mathematical basics such a linear algebra, differentiation, integration and matrices.
