Objectives:

1- Assess client health status and current level of adaptation using skills of observation, measurement, and interviewing.

2- Describe how biologic, physiology and psychosocial concepts can be used as a basis for professional nursing practice to maintain, promote, and restore health.

3- Identify responsibility and accountability issues for professional nursing care provided to individuals.

4- Differentiate abnormal and ineffective bio physiologic functioning and behaviors and evaluate their significance to determine priorities for professional nursing care.

5- Develop proficiency in performing basic nursing skills safely.

6- Use teaching strategies in promoting the bio physiologic and psychosocial integrity of an individual.

7- Formulate methods of evaluation in determining the effectiveness of nursing care related to established client goals and outcome criteria.

8- Collaborate with other team members and clients to improve the quality of health care.

(Course Outcomes):

Knowledge (cognitive):

The medical surgical Nursing course allows the student to acquire knowledge towards patients with GIT , Cardiovascular, liver, renal , respiratory and neurological disorders.

Skills (psycho-sensory motor):

The medical surgical nursing course allow the student to be trained in the faculty lab which help her to practice all the basic procedures and be familiar with the advanced ones in the clinical setting with respect of hospital policy e.g. ostomy care, NGT, tracheostomy care, thoracentesis, under water seal, liver biopsy, paracentesis, CVP, etc….

This course gives the student the knowledge which used in applying the critical thinking approach and decision making in the healthcare medical and surgical settings. Also it helps in developing skills needed in nursing care based on Nursing process approach. The course helps the student in identifying the actual and potential problems related to patients with GIT , cardiovascular, liver, hematological renal , respiratory, endocrine , and neurological disorders.

Attitude (affective):

This course helps the student to gain a positive attitudes, involvement, behaviors, skills, and ethics toward caring patient with medical- surgical disorders..

Interpersonal skills and responsibilities:

This course encourages the students to apply a basic principles of her professional behavior toward working in a team, and / to be punctual and introducing reports to her supervisors etc….

Communication skills:

While the student implementing the Nursing interventions to the patients with adult health problems which starts always with taking the history, she could apply all the principles of communication skills properly and also with all the health team around.

Each student is expected to practice the following:

A. Grooming:

1) Wear white lab coat, white scarf, white shoes and shocks during the clinical practice, if not student will not allowed to practice in the unit and be counted as absent for that day.

2) Bring required equipment: pen light, stethoscope, a book- note, second- watch and measurement tape.

3) Jewelry, makeup, and unusual appearance are not allowed in the clinical period.

4) Shorten nails.

B. Punctuation:

5) Be on time in the unit.

6) Always report to the instructor on arrival and departure.

7) Absence from any clinical day will lead to lose of the mark of that day. For any unexpected emergency cases, the course coordinator should be informed and appropriate action will be taken according to the situation.

Each student is expected to do the following:

1. The students will show punctuality, participation, ethical consideration at all classes, labs.

2. The students will exhibit behaviors of adequate preparation of content in theory and lab with full participation.

3. The students will practice physical assessment and perform all the procedures learn it in the lab of 2nd and 3rd year in the hospital.

Students responsibilities to the course:

1. The student practices through team work, consulting and clarifying with the instructors as necessary.

2. Succeed in written, lab, and hospital exam.

3. Conduct assignment as needed.

Expectations for each assignment and project:

1. Read information from different up to date materials through textbook and net.

2. Using audio-visual materials.

3. Should be presented and written in time and be accurate, complete, clear, and organized.

4. Assignment should be submitted two days after rotation. If the assignment is late quarter of the whole mark will be deducted.

5. All the presentations should be submitted to be reviewed with the assigned instructors minimum 5 days before presenting for colleagues, and then hard copy is sent attached with evaluation form and CD according to the discussed content.

6. Using of meaning images, diagrams, and create a visual representation.

Unexpected behavior during the course:

Attendance Policy:

1. Third year students are expected active participation and encouraged to attend all classes.

2. Medical excuses or other medical reports would be considering individually.

3. Responsibility of the absent students is attaining the content of missed- classes.

4. Excessive absences of the total study hours more than 25%, may result in a grade “F” in the related course.

5. Students are expected to attend all clinical experiences, which constitutes 15 % of the course grading.
