IE 311 OPERATIONS RESEARCH-I SPRING 1430 H (SPRING 2009) King Abdul Aziz University – Department of Industrial Engineering

Course Objectives

:

Introduction to Operations Research; formulation of linear programming problems; graphical solution; the Simplex algorithm; duality and sensitivity analysis; transportation and assignment problems; Integer and Goal programming.

Prerequisites

: MATH 241.

Textbook

: “Operations Research, Application and Algorithms”, by Winston, Wayne L., (4th Ed.) ITP- International Thomson Publishing, 1994.

Class Time

: Sun. / Tue: 9:30 – 10:50

Instructor

: Professor: Ahmad A. Mored.

Office Hours

: Sun. / Tue: 11:50 – 12:30, or by appointment.

Grading Policy

:

Mid-Term Exam 30% (Tuesday, 25 Rabee II 1430 (April 21th, 2009)).

Final 30% (As scheduled by the University).

Homework 10% Due at the following class after assignment.

Quizzes 10% Pub Quizzes (No make up at all).

Project 20% (Grading Policy is in the next page).

Cheating

: Any observed act of dishonesty will automatically result in an F grade.

:

1) Introduction to Operations Research.

2) Formulation of Linear Programming Problems.

3) Graphical Solution and the Simplex Algorithm.

4) Duality and Sensitivity Analysis.

5) Transportation and Assignment Problems.

6) Integer and Goal Programming.

a. Formulation of Integer Programming Problems.

b. Branch and Bound Technique.

Project

: Due Tuesday, 12th of Jumad II 1430 (May 12th , 2009.)

Teams consisting of 2-3 members should choose a topic (representing a real industrial application). Teams are expected to formulation the problem; the formulation MUST BE approved by the instructor before proceeding with any subsequent work.

Term Project Grading Policy

1. Progress Reports (10 points):

1st report: Approval from (& of) the Company where project is to be conducted.

2nd report: Approval of the Topic.

3rd report: Approval of the Formulation.

2. General Issues:

 Language (Grammar/ Spelling) 5 Points

 Appearance / Table of contents/ Acknowledgment 5 Points

 Cover Page:

o Title’s descriptiveness of content 6 Points o Where it was done 2 Points o Course name & number 2 Points

3. Management Report:

 Practicality of the project (Validation & Verification) 20 Points

 Statement of the problem (Clarity/ Completeness) 10 Points

 Show importance of what was done 10 Points

 Using Data to show contribution

(improvements, savings ... etc.) 10 Points

4. Technical Report:

 Statement of the problem (detailed) 5 Points

 Show what was done (technical) 5 Points

 Analysis & Conclusions (technical) 5 Points

5. Appendix:

 Software inputs & outputs 5 Points (Comments should be complete and detailed)
