Courses Description for The First Year General and Organic Chemistry
This course provides the students with the basic introduction of general chemistry needed to understand the chemical and physical properties of the main classes of organic compounds. Accordingly, the course firstly introduces the students to the atomic structure and chemical bonds between atoms. The Periodic Table and the main trend in the chemical properties and trends of the elements will be covered. In addition, the electronic configuration, using both Bohr and atomic orbitals, will help the student to determine the reactivity of the atoms and draw Lewis’s structure of organic compounds. The acid and bases, and their definitions, will be introduced and their stoichiometric calculation will be covered.
The main classes of organic compounds will be covered and their physical properties, based on their intermolecular interactions, will be explained.
Besides that, the chemical reaction of the main classes of organic compounds will be introduced and the mechanism that occurred to obtain the final products will be explained. The correct nomenclature of the basic organic compounds will be introduced using the IUPAC. In order to add high level of critical
General Biology and Cytology
Cytology and General Biology course introduces the principles and concepts of biology and covers the internal structure of the cell, molecules of the cell, traffic across biological membranes, metabolism, respiration and photosynthesis, cell-cell signaling, cell division, molecular biology of the gene, DNA technology and some familiar techniques used in cell biology.

General Histology
By the end of this course, the student will utilize the basic science literature of cells and tissues to identify the normal structure of the human cell and its components and their function in the cell, these will help the student to recognize the main characteristics of the human basic tissues (epithelium, connective, muscular and nervous tissues). The student will be able to differentiate between different types of tissues and organs under the light microscope. The student will apply knowledge and skill in the correlation of their structure to function which will enable the student to develop concepts and sufficient understanding of the subject to be able to pursue post-graduate studies and continuing medical education.
General Anatomy & Embryology
The main objective of the course is to enhance understanding of the basic human anatomy as well as different body systems and organ correlations that are critical for understanding functions and disorders. Upon successfully completing this course, students will be able to: Identify and discuss the organization of the human body in general; Define and contrast the terms, organs and systems; List the major organs & systems of the human body; Briefly describe the major structures of each major organ; & analyze and understand the clinical anatomy of the human body.
General Physiology
The course is aimed at introducing the students to the normal functions of the human body and the mechanisms by which these functions are achieved. Students will learn the general principles of human functions and the various physiological systems that perform them, including the interrelationships that exist between them. Accordingly, the concept of homeostasis and how the different body systems work together to achieve homeostasis will be discussed, including the control systems and their mode of operation. An overview and description of the functions of

several physiological systems will be taught. These physiological systems will include body fluids and blood, excitable tissues, cardiovascular, respiratory, gastrointestinal, renal, endocrine and nervous systems. The students will therefore have a broad knowledge of the intricacies and complexities of the human body and how the body works as an automaton.
Medical Biochemistry
The course is designed to provide students with a basic understanding of the structure, properties and function of biologically important macromolecules in cells. Furthermore, the course will address fundamental biochemical processes in cells and highlight the reactions of intermediary metabolism. The topics covered include the chemistry of cells, biological macromolecules, membrane structure, bioenergetics and metabolism, enzymes, amino acids and peptides, structure and function of proteins, glycolysis, oxidative phosphorylation, lipid metabolism, nucleic acid metabolism, amino acid metabolism, membrane receptors and signal transduction. The course consists of lectures, tutorials and laboratory exercises.
Dental Anatomy
This course is designed to enable the students to know the basic elements of tooth morphology (of both primary and permanent) which is an essential pre-requisite for other dental courses. There will be an emphasis on identifying primary and permanent teeth and classifying occlusion.
