URP 403: Urban Design

Spring Semester 142٤-142٥ H (200٤ G) Instructor:

Dr. Essam Mesbah Abdel Aziz

I. Course Objectives:

1. To familiarize participants with the key theoretical ideas and principles that undergird urban design practice today. Ideas and principles of urban design have come from theoreticians or urbanists (Lynch, Crane, Krier, etc.) or urban design practitioners (Wallace, Bacon, Jacobs, etc.). Some are old, and some are new (Post WWII). Some are European or American, and others are Asian or Middle Eastern in their origin. Origins, development, applications, influence and current significance of all principles shall be descussed and explained throught this course.

2. To discuss the evolving p lace of urban design among the professions of Architecture, Landscape Architecture and Urban Planning; and to explain where urban design – as a field of professional activity – belongs, and what should its relationships be to the other design professions.

3. Undertaking research and detailed description of some major urban design case studies throught the world.

II Course Outline:

The following subjects shall be covered during the course:

1. Urban design definition and place among the professions of environmental design.

2. Pre Industrial Era (Renaissance and 17th and 18th centuries).

3. The industrial revolution and the city beautiful movement.

4. Post Worl War II.

5. Postmodernism era.

6. The new urbanism.
