Brief Description of Undergraduate Courses Taught: (Course Title – Code: Description)
1 Photochemistry - CHEM 324: Today photochemistry has become one of the most powerful research tool.
Compounds of different molecules are occurred through various photochemical reactions. Photochemistry is the branch of chemistry concerned with the chemical effects of light. Generally, this term is used to describe a chemical reaction caused by absorption of ultraviolet (wavelength from 100 to 400 nm), visible light (400 – 750 nm) or infrared radiation (750 – 2500 nm).
2 Colloid Chemistry - CHEM 426: This course provides an introduction to the fundamental aspects of colloid chemistry and colloidal dispersions. Colloidal dispersions are present in every-day life, from food systems to ceramics. Therefore, the course is relevant for people working in research, development and formulation of any colloidal system, be it paints, coatings, ceramics, food or pharmaceutical formulations.
3 Surface Chemistry and Catalysis - CHEM 323: This course deals mainly with an introduction to surface chemistry and its applications. The course includes as well classifications of adsorptions and types of adsorption isotherm. Topics covered also include catalysis and the types of catalysts, methods of preparations, properties and kinetics of homogeneous catalyst. At the end, this course will introduce the students the nature properties of materials and its crystal lattices, types of semiconductors and mechanism of conduction.
4 General Chemistry II - CHEM 142: This course deals mainly with an introduction to gases, gas laws, and kinetic theory of gases. The course includes types of solutions, ideal and non ideal solutions, chemical and ionic equilibrium. Topics covered also thermochemistry, energy changes in chemical reactions, acid-base equilibrium, buffer solutions as well. At the end, this course will introduce the students to the phase rule and phase equilibrium.
5 Environmental Chemistry - CHEM 373: This course provides an introduction to the fundamental aspects of environmental chemistry and their related major ecosystem factors like photochemical, kinetic, and analytical and transport aspects of environmental phenomena. The topics presented in this course include:
introduction to environmental systems, energy sources. Air pollution and air pollutants, soli pollution and composition and phases of soil, water pollution, sources of water pollutants, and purification of water.
Nearby topics, such as sea water desalination, are also covered to some degree in order to make the course complete on a stand-alone basis.
6 Research Methods - CHEM 474: Deals with the basic and fundamnetal steps on doing scientific research, wrtinig proposal, citation, and skills of presentation.
7 Corrosion - CHEM 428: Corrosion may be defined as a destructive phenomena, chemical or electrochemical, which can attack any metal or alloy through reaction by the surrounding environment and in extreme cases may cause structural failure. Corrosion occurs because of the natural tendency for most metals to return to their natural state. The importance of corrosion studies is two folds. The first is economic, including the reduction of material losses. The second is conservation, applied primarily to metal resource
