Course Description:
This is a three hour credit course that introduces students to the science of linguistics. It provides some answers to basic questions about the nature of human language. The aim of the course is to briefly introduce the different branches of modern linguistics. It defines language and linguistics and touches on the following topics: phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics. It also addresses language acquisition, language and the brain, and discourse analysis.
Course Objectives:
- Define language and linguistics
- Provide answers to basic questions about the nature of human language
- Allow students to become familiar with the different branches of modern linguistics - Allow students to distinguish between the following linguistic fields: phonetics, phonology,
morphology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics.
- Introduce language acquisition, language and the brain, and discourse analysis.
Course Content:
The following chapters are to be covered in LANE 321 course for Fall semester 2008-09:
- Animals and human language - The sounds of language
- The sound patterns of language - Words and word-formation processes - Morphology
- Phrases and sentences: grammar - Syntax
- Semantics - Pragmatics - Discourse analysis - Language and the brain - First language acquisition
- Second language acquisition/ learning

Attendance policy:
- Students are expected to be punctual and attend all classes.
- If a student arrives after the scheduled beginning time for class, it will be put down in the attendance sheet as Late (3 times Late = 1 absence).
- Being absent for more than 20% of allocated course time means that the student will receive a DN (denied from final exam) grade which is equivalent to an F.
