PEDIATRIC DENTISTRY ( PDS 511)

Objectives:

1. Summary of main learning outcomes for students enrolled in the course.

The objectives of this course are to ascertain that each student has acquired:

Adequate knowledge of Pediatric Dentistry knowing the facts and some of the explained “ways” of the profession, a reasonable ability to solve problems in Pediatric Dentistry, and the ability to learn independently from texts, internet lectures, library materials, and discussion with faculty members.

By the end of the course, the student should be able to:

1. Differentiate between normal and abnormal development of the human organism.

2. Guide the behavior of the child and adolescent to the extent that necessary dental procedures can be completed efficiently and safely.

3. Develop a data base from which he/she will be able to formulate an accurate diagnosis.

4. DDiagnose the nature of the child and adolescent’s oral health problem (s) andplan appropriate ate therapy.

5. Effectively communicate with the parent(s).

6. Implement a scientifically-based, effective program of primary prevention for children and adolescents.

7. Render restorative care for teeth whose structural integrity has been compromised.

8. Treat pulpally affected teeth.

9. Supervise the developing occlusion in such a manner that selected malocclusion can be prevented and/or intercepted with appropriate therapy.

10. Provide dental care for mentally, physically and/or emotionally disabled children.

11. Recognize and refer patients whose conditions are beyond his/her competency and qualifications to competent specialists to provide the required care.
