Over the past year, the Middle East North Africa (MENA) region has seen increased cyber security attacks carried out by highly sophisticated actors and the threats continue to grow daily. In order for the Oil & Gas sector to innovate and advance their enterprises, they must make cyberSecurity a priority. By implementing a proactive, dynamic defense strategy, leveraging a comprehensive training program, and engaging cloud and mobile solutions, organizations can more effectively achieve their business objectives while maintaining a secure environment.
Mike is Vice Chairman of Booz Allen Hamilton, where his primary roles include serving on the firm’s Leadership Team and leading Booz Allen’s rapidly expanding cyber business. After retiring from the Navy in 1996 as a Vice Admiral, Mr. McConnell joined Booz Allen, and led the development of the firm’s Information Assurance business and the firm’s Intelligence business. Upon being asked by President George W. Bush in 2007 to become the second Director of Nation Intelligence, he left Booz Allen and served as the DNI for two years under Presidents Bush and Obama. he managed the expansive national Intelligence Community – an organization of over 100,000 people and an annual budget of over $47B. In 2009, he returned to Booz Allen to lead the firm’s Intelligence business.
Mr. McConnell holds an M.P.A. degree from George Washington University, is a graduate of the National Defense University, the National Defense Intelligence College, and holds a B.A. degree in Economics from Furman University.

Oil and gas has had a pioneering role in the development of new technologies. There is a tremendous scientific, technological, managerial, and financial, innovations that has been developed and implemented. Many sources of energy that were completely incapable now are marketable. The most recent example is Sand Oil in Canada and Shale gas (fracking) that is basically revolutionizing the market for oil and gas. Similarly, the oil and gas industry is also interested in joining forces with renewable energy because many oil and gas industries consider themselves in the energy market rather than oil and gas. The presentation will discuss what Masdar Institute is doing in developing human capacity in the region of this world. Our students are entrusted and motivated to move to toward innovation and entrepreneurship.

Fuad is responsible for managing the technology infrastructure, refinery information systems and business applications across many divisions within Takreer including Ruwais Refinery, Abu Dhabi Refinery, Finance, HR, and Procurement. He holds a BS in Electrical Engineering (Electronics) and a MS in Engineering Management, from Portland State University, USA. Fuad serves on the Maximo Oil & Gas Industry Advisory Council. With more than 15 years of experience in IT, he has headed Takreer’s IT Organization for 10 years during which he has lead to establishing the IT Strategy and Policies & Procedures in line with business objectives. Under his leadership, the company has automated many time consuming and paper intensive business processes, upgraded business critical applications such as Maximo and deployed Refinery Information Systems within the Abu Dhabi and Ruwais refineries. He has leveraged IT as an enabler of automated processes and a provider of reliable, secure and up to date business critical information.

Currently there is so much buzz around Big Data and the expected wonders that will be achievable using it. Everyone is asking the same questions; is it real, which initiatives should I start, what is its expected role and what will happen if we do not pursue any Big Data initiative?
The goal of our presentation is to deal with the myths and reality regarding the applicability of Big Data and its promised benefits in the Oil
& Gas industry. We will focus on the identification of tactical solutions for short-term improvements (cost, process efficiency, etc.) as well as strategic areas, which could be realized over a longer period of time with significant impact on the overall performance, including process improvements and transformation changes. Furthermore, most Oil & Gas infrastructure owners are aware of the opportunities resulting from advanced analysis stemming from the merger of production process related data typically gathered in corporate systems. However, only few of them actually use these capabilities to improve performance of the production process in their plants. Despite the already existing systems, which operate in both IT and Operational Technologies environments, they are, at the moment, used predominantly in the batch manufacturing industry as opposed to the process industry. Therefore, we will discuss the possible future of production process optimization systems in Oil & Gas and how Big Data is going to influence changes in this market.

He has over 25 years of international experience shaping Enterprise Intelligence solutions as well as IT strategies for global companies. Protecting our Cyber Space: Staying Ahead of the Game

Protecting the cyber space has been a critical element in protecting national infrastructures. The increase of cyber attacks in both magnitude and sophistication, and the catastrophic damage that can result from successful ones, has made cyber security an essential, yet challenging, requirement for protecting national assets. The focus of this talk is to highlight new trends in cyber attacks and the importance of R&D in protecting national infrastructure.
Basel Alomair is an Assistant Professor and Founding Director of the Center for Cybersecurity (C4C) in King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology (KACST), an Affiliate Professor in the Electrical Engineering Department at the University of Washington- Seattle, and an Information Security Consultant for the Technology Control Company (TCC). He was recognized by the IEEE Technical Committee on Fault-Tolerant Computing and the IFIP Working Group on Dependable Computing and Fault Tolerance through the 2010 IEEE/IFIP William Carter Award. He was also recognized by the 2011 University of Washington’s Outstanding Research Award. Dr. Basel is also the recipient of the 2012 University of Washington’s Center for Information Assurance and Cybersecurity Distinguished Dissertation Award.

The indispensability of digital engineers to enable the increasing number of projects to address the galloping demand for energy is well recognized. However, there are fresh challenges that must be successfully overcome. The digital engineer faces rapidly evolving digital technologies, a new social milieu and sensitivity in local cultures, the urgent need for development of national talent and greater focus on critical infrastructure security and information protection issues. The new generation of digital engineers will have to replace the current generation more rapidly than the industry has experienced in several decades. Accelerated development programs need to be in place as well as mentoring programs for this new generation. Maximizing the Probability of Finding and Recovering O&G Through Simulation and Big Data Analysis

With escalating energy costs, there is an urgent need to improve hydrocarbon exploration and recovery. To maximize the probability of finding and recovering O&G, it is critical to predict the nature of oil fields, their locations and the number of wells without expensive drilling.
This is done by sophisticated multi-dimensional seismic imaging and very accurate multi-component, multi-scale reservoir simulation, which requires analysis of big data and considerable HPC capability. At Adaptive, we enhance complex, compute-intensive simulations and analyze big data faster, more accurately and most cost effectively giving O&G companies a competitive advantage by improving exploration and recovery. During this session, Adaptive will demonstrate its award-winning Moab optimization and scheduling software and how to perform simulations remotely and analyze big data efficiently by optimizing cloud and HPC environments.

The completion of a COTS/ERP software product implementation project leads to the commencement of the new phase of system life cycle – the post implementation governance or aftermath of the implemented system. The Total Cost of Ownership of COTS/ERP depends heavily on the post implementation governance mechanism in addition to the approach adopted during the implementation since the shortcomings of the prior phases come to light after using the system. The post implementation governance is critical to sustain the support levels without having any business impact and cost overruns. The identification of additional business requirements need to be carefully addressed keeping in view the best practices and the guidelines of configuring/customizing the software. Any gaps in the governance model may result in complexities, over expenditures, degradation of service levels, delays in meeting business requirements and issue resolution. The presentation will highlight major pitfalls during the implementation and post implementation of that may leads towards process delays and cost overruns. It will also suggests ways to achieve sustained support service levels while maximizing ROI.

In business, making decisions about high stake investments, and key staff appointments, the ability to evaluate credibility is crucial. Mr. Almulla has over 20 years of extensive experience in the field of IT. He has been working in all the areas in Information Technology such as Application Development, Information Security, Architecture Designing and Networking, Process Control, etc.
He started his career as a Programmer in 1988 in Dubal Aluminum Company Limited, and is currently Vice President, Information Technology and also a member of the Executive Management Committee in DUBAL. He has Bachelor of Science from the University of Arizona in Computer Engineering and MBA from University of New England, Australia. Additionally, Mr. Almulla has completed the “Program for Executive Development” from International Institute for Management Development (IMD).

He has been working at ADNOC for over a decade, working through various major projects as well as aiding in the development of training programs on HSE MS and Code of Practices.
