Microalgal biodiesel is considered an alternative to fossil fuel and also potentially reduce the introduction of n e w COj b y displacing fossil bydtocart>on fuels. Nowadays, researching on renewable energy Is mainly focus on biodiesel from microalgae due to their fast growth rates and high-yield production. In order t o improve this field in Vietnam, w e isolated 8 microalgae strains local species containing lipid from water samples from ponds and lakes and used rapid screening metiiod for lipid producUon in microalgae tiased on OD41]/]]] and OD^gyjjj/ODjjQ Nile Red fluorescence signals, and growth capacity of microalgal strains were also surveyed through OD7H1 absorbtion. We determined 8 microalgae strains includes Kirchneriella obesa (West) Schmidle, Asterococcus limneticus G.
M Smith, Coelastrum cambricum Archer, Pediastrum duplex Meyea, Cosmarium cf. sumatranum Krieger, Scenedesmus ellipsoideus Chodat Scenedesmus acuminatus (Lag.) Chodat Scenedesmus dimorphus containing lipid fiom water samples from ponds and lakes Futhermore, providing a reference for the fiiture biodiesel production using these microalgat s p e d e s , we also determined lipid contents of these species ranged from 7.33% to 24.7% o f dry bimtiass in normal conditions and reached over 3 0 % in d r y biomass under nitrogen starvation. Besides, their triacylglycerols accounted for 6 5 % to 99% in the respective total lipids, were detennised using gas cliromatography and other si^Iementaiy methods.
