SUMMARY

Local yellow cattle breed still made up a high percentage of total catUe population in Vietnam. These breed should be inseminated with exotic breed to increase their genetic ment. As the catde bred in smallholder fermer^ display estrus sporadic and uncoacentrated, s^lication of artificial insemination (AI) tends to limit to areas in close proxinuty to urban aty. Therefore, solutions should l>e fiiiind to enhance the possibilities for using artificial insemination. This paper reports the application of estrus synchronization for artificial insemination of beef cattle in Dien Bien and Thai Binh provinces, where die rate of artificial insemination is still very low. A total of 738 local yellow and Sind crossbreed cattle (214 cattle in Dien Bien and 524 cattle in Thai Binh province) were assigned randomly into one of five experimental groups. Group 1, in which cows received 2 ml of PGF2a, followed in 11 d witti 2 ml PGF2a and 500 UI PMSG on the same day. Group 2 and 3 includes cows received 1000 IU HCG or 12nig FSH instead of PMSG as in the groupl. Group 4, m which cows were administered lOOpg GnRH, followed in 7 d with 2ml of PGF2a At 48 h after PGF2a, a second GnRH was administered. Group 5 contains cows were injected GnRH and PGF2a as group 4 but not repeated GnRH mjections as group 4. After the last injection in each group, cows were observed for estrus twice daily and those displaying estrus were artificial inseminated. At the end of experiment, rate of detected estrus in Che group I is 90 % in Dien Bien, 84.90 % in Thai Binh and rate of conception achieved 68,5 %in Dien Bien and 82,88 % in Thai Binh. The rates of eslnis and conception ID the group 2 are 57,1 % and 75% while those of group 3 are 80,8 % and 81%; group 4 are 62 and 69,4% together with the results of group 5 are 82,0S and 80,28%, respectively. The results showed that synchronization of estrus has the potential to enhance the possibilities for usmg AI and to help improving productivity and quality of beef cattle
