Summary

The antioxidant activities of methanol and water extracts of the buds of Cleistocalyx operculatus Mert et Perry collected in Vietnam were investigated. These extracts showed possessing free radical scavenging activities against DPPH (with IC50 values of 77.8 and 22.5 pg/ml, respectively) and ABTS'* (TEAC 0.98 and 0.57 pg/ml, respectively). Fudhermore, both extracts remarkably inhibited either lipid- peroxidation of rat brain homogenate (ICso 7.1 and 8.4 pg/ml, respectively) or enzymic activity of lipoxygenase (ICso 75.3 and 145.1 pg/ml, respectively). These findings proved the ethnomediclnal use of C. operculatus as tea in Vietnam really beneficial to prevent oxidative stress-related diseases.
