2. Phuong phip nghidn ciiu

CLASSIFICATION OF DEGRADED FORESTLANDS AND ORIENTATION OF SILVICULTURAL PRACTICES

Which silvicultural practices are suitable for degraded forestlands in Vietnam? In order to solve this problem, it is necessary to classify degraded forestlands into homogeneous groups based on the rehabilitation capacity of foresUands. This article analyzes the database of 117 permanent sample plots distributed in the different ecological regions of Vietnam. The objects of the study are degraded evergreen broadleaf forests at different levels of degradation. Scientific foundations for classification of degraded forestiands are based on the relationship between increments of number of potential saplings Avith the key important factors of forest sites. A simple and applicable table for determining the weighted values of forest site factors is set up fi"om a predicted mathematic equation. There are three levels of rehabilitation capacity of degraded forestlands: A (good), B (average), and C (bad). Correlatively, three silvicultural systems are made up for each group of degraded forestiands, including restoration through natural regeneration (for group K), assisted natural regeneration (for group B), and forest reclamation (for group C). Scientifically, the article provided important understanding on the relationship between the rehabilitation capacity of degraded forests and the key factors of forest sites. From practical perpective, this article contributes to establishment of technical and managemential guidelines, to conduction and supervision of sihdcultural works, aiming at better management of evergreen broadleaf natural forests in a simple and effective way by application of the simple table on the rehabiliation capacity of the degraded forestiands.
