The material social conditions of unemployment are equally important in the contribution they make to the position of the unemployed person. This paper attempts to review some of the available material in the area as a starting point for developing a greater understanding of the unemployed in general and. Related to this discussion is the understanding of the attitudes people have towards work and unemployment.

By discussing the different theoretical models and ideas that surround the problem of the unemployed. The penultimate part of the discussion draws together in a broad sense specific consequences of unemployment for health. Subjects were encouraged to tell their stories with minimal intervention from the interviewer.

The true extent of South Africa's unemployment problem is masked by the Bantustan policy. Due to the vicious implementation of the strict immigration laws, the vast majority of the unemployed are confined to the Bantustans. Part of the process of dealing with unemployment is understanding why a person is unemployed.

Groups feel that an understanding of unemployment enables the individual to overcome some of the feeling of uselessness. Thirdly, structured research I-interviews must be designed to successfully evaluate the experiences of the unemployed. May it also have been useful to contribute and to some extent expand the understanding of the unemployed.

ANNEXURE 1

I went out almost every day to look for work, but now I don't know where to look. I am thinking of leaving Cape Town and looking for a job somewhere else, but it costs money. My father says that in the old days it was not easy to get a job for a man who was strong and would work.

Sometimes we get together in the morning and go looking for a job together. They think you stole or that they fired you for some other reason." For a change, there is someone who cleans during the day, someone is there for the children, there is someone.

As soon as something is going on there, she will tell you that she knows a good cutter who also needs a job.' I know what it's like to have no education, not to be able to get a job that pays well, not to be able to work when you lose work. Now they're all getting on my nerves, they'll drive me crazy if I have to stay here much longer. ".

I have to pay a lot of train fare and bus fare to go to the factories to look for woz:k. You get moved from here to there to 'here to there just because the Whites want to live in Claremont." I miss going to ~ork because at the end of the day you felt like you did something.

I used to get a lot of work, but now they don't seem to be building many new houses anymore. It was always difficult because you never knew when you were going to get a job and when you weren't going to get a job. I think they start to think you're drunk or you're not going to work hard.

Before he left, we took turns looking for work, because the children cannot go to daycare because there is no money. You can also pray to God to protect you 'so you don't kill your children.'

SUBJECT I

34;It's not that you want everyone to be in the same position as you, that's just what I do. They just want to tell me they don't want me. I don't have a good reference from my last job. Now when you apply for a job, people look at that and they don't want to hire you.

Sometimes I worry when I will be able to work again and when I will have money again, but right now things are fine, but I don't know for how long. They also want to know \~why you were fired ~and you don't feel like you can tell them that because they'll crack the bear. My father-in-law was very angry and said that I will never get another job in such times.

All their little games that I used to be able to deal with now just piss me off, they've started avoiding me, which is awful. Sometimes I think I'll never be able to have money again." 34; When I lost my job, I thought, it's not too serious, I'll be able to find another one.

I know I can't do much, but I've always been able to talk myself into something. You get excited, you're able to 'talk, you're able to sell, you're able to convince them that this is what they need. I used to be exciting and active, but now I find it hard to do even small things.

I don't want to live in that kind of world for the rest of my life. You think you'll never get it back, but of course I will.
