First and foremost, the Lord has given me the strengths, talents, and competencies to undertake this research—until my admission to the Mastel course. LIP Lo tlir everything that was expected of me. Thank you for challenging me to see things clearly and accept the world as a useful place. All involved in the liostcls who were a great help during this research.

Please note that the opinions and conclusions expressed in this research are solely those of the author and cannot necessarily be attributed to the National Association. Multiple licensing analyzes with physical health as a dependent variable Multiple regression analyzes with psychosomatic mental health as a dependent variable. Multiple 12egressive .4nalyscs with integration as a dependent variable Multiplc regression analyzes with separation as a dependent variable.

The results indicated that Semales practice separation or assimilation, while men use integration as an acculturation strategy. Female hostels preferred segregation as an acculturation strategy, while male hostels preferred integration as an acculturation strategy.

CHAPTER 1

PROBLEM STATEMENT

South Africa's transition to apartheid past to a ~mdc determined li l t w e a s s e ~ ~ ~ b l c d about ihc vision of 'non-racial' democracy and 'intercultural' liariiiion (a rainbow nation). 011 issues regarding irregularities between tlic different cultural groups in Soulli Africa. Illis is demonstrable from the fact that sufficient mutual understanding between the current cultural groups ill South Africa documents does not yet exist. Tlrcse issues include aspects such as tlie rise ol' Xenofobia (i.e. indicates a phobic attitude towards st[-angers or o i t l r e unknown) (Anon, 2001); llre emphasis on the fact that racism is still alive and well in South Africa (Desai.. 1998); and the fact that apxllleid n ~ i l l i o n s o f people destroyed self-respect and caused disrcspcctr~~lness against ollrcrs (Bosliulb 1006).

Whereas South Africa is stuck in an apartheid era and is now seen as a disadvantaged state. This process of adapting to culture h s t where one enters a circle of ~ n l i n l i l i a r and adapting to the new environment requires l u n ~ e s. This happens when n ~ ~ n o r i t y ol individuals accept their cultural values and identity and restore the values of the world's cultures.

I'cyclological and socio-cultural adaptation is positively related (Berry and the Strenytli (if the association is related to the cultural distance and the degree of integration of cross-cultural traveler^ in the social milieu. In South Africa n.1 studies that focus on the acculturation process among a sample of hostel residents and the effect it has on health can, despite the above principles.

To achieve the desired objectives, a cross-sectional research design will be used, where a sample is drawn from a population with the same title. This is a six-item survey developed by the researchers of this study, which shows that participants believe they are willing to participate in acculturation. Written statistics (namely, mean standard deviations, skcwncss, and kurtosis) were used to evaluate the organist, sulmarization, and description of the l~cilata (I-loucll.

RESEARCH ARTICLE

CONCLUSIONS

The general objective of this study was to determine: the acculturation process in a higher education institution. The previous intention was to attach the cult. Sepurofiun is the third strategy and this ~CCLII-S when minority individuals accept their c u l ~ u r a l value antl identity and reject the values of the host cultures. this process cnoscli by the larger i t society is called L~.YL.IUSIC)II (Berry 2001). The second step was to determine the strategics of acculturation in a group of undergraduate students in a lower educational institution.

Results obtained using the various acculturative nodes showed that negrants who are ill tend to prefer integration. I~rtcgration is usually the successful Inust; malginc~lisution the least and assimilation and separation strategies are inter~ncdiatc (Van Oudenhoven & Kisses. The African11 group revealed higher levels of separation and the White group showed higher levels oC lntcgl-atio~~.

Numerous studies have shown that cntcrirrrg in all unknown changes in relation to new environmental changes. 19971 Social support can influence the health problem that can be experienced as a result of increased acculturation. The fourth objective was to determine the extent to which an integrative strategy of culture prevails in the South.

M A N O V A S conducted with Acculturalion Strategies as the dependent variables revealed that k ~ n a l c Iiostels experience higher le\:els of separation and onalc residences experience higher levels of Intcgtxtio~i.

Further research should be conducted on the role of social support in the acculturation process and health.
