In response to our message, we received a confirmation from the Norwegian Embassy dated February 18, 1961, stating that the text of our message to the Embassy had been forwarded to Norway. I would be grateful if you could advise me too ~. the Norwegian authorities who~~eP ~eea~i-ng Norway-. to the government of South Africa will be based on weight,. size or position are not the same and will therefore have to be left at a Norwegian station. I have the honor to refer to my communication of the 27th of July last in relation to the South African expedition to the Norwegian Station in the Antarctic. 1. With reference to your Minute 102/2/7/2 or July 7 and our interim reply of August 30, 1961, I wish to inform you of the following communication of October 1, which we received from the Norwegian Secretary-General. 'Affaires a.i. 34; I have the honor to refer to my communication of the 27th of July last regarding the South African expedition to the Norwegian Antarctic Station.
I have now received a reply from Norway regarding the placement of the buildings and equipment at Norway station. The Norwegian Government has agreed to everything at Rorway Station, with the exception of the meteorological tower, which the Norwegian Government lent to the South African Government under the agreement of 30 October 1959 between the two Governments, which is now being transferred to the considered abandoning the South African station at Drenning Maud Lond and making it available to the South African expedition free of charge for as long as the expedition can use it. It will be noted that the Norwegian response does not directly address the statement expressed in our no to the Norwegians that, after the Norwegian station has been cleared, some of the unexplained Norwegian equipment is present.

I would like to add that in due course the South African authorities will provide a list of the apparatus and equipment that was transferred to the new base and of that which was left behind at Norway Station. Thore will be four tractors (three Muskeg caterpillars and one Oliver OC.3) as well as two dog teams at the base. No other expedition(s) will be organized in South African territory. expeditions may call at South African ports on their way to or from Antarctica, but no details in this regard are available.
Limited cartographic work will be done near the base and during the traverse. Station and traverse observations will be conducted at, and near, the base to measure snow accumulation and ablation, pile patterns, snow surface observations, snow. stratigraphy, Ramsonde soundings to 150 cm. below the snow surface and microscopic studies of ice crystals. The distribution and nature of the pack ice will be recorded during the emergency journeys from Cape Town to the base.
Radiosonde and radio soundings will be carried out once a day at 1100 GMT. possible wind and temperature measurements. at several levels above the surface and snow temperature measurements down to 4 m will be continued. measured and optical phenomena will be observed and recorded. Magnetic traverses will be carried out in conjunction with seismic and gravimetric programs in the area from the ice front to the mountains between approx. longitude oo and 5oW. observations will be made with a proton magnetometer. They will be responsible for the construction of the buildings and will return with the ship.
Netterberg of the South African Navy acts as an advisor. joined the United States' "Operation Deep Freeze 6111 as a South African observer.
