\I y dear Little Cousins,

"iexL Thun;r:h1) \\ e shall all be celebrating

!he merry festival of Purim, which com- memorates the story of the Book of Eslher- the ·' J\tleg:illah" which is read in the syna- f!Ogue during the festival.

The ~Lory tells of the dreadful calamil}

\~hich threatened the Jewish people wbo lived in the proYinccs of Persia thousands of years ago. At that time Ahasuerus was 1 · ing of Persia and he chose Esther, the beautiful niece of Mordecai for his queen.

At that time Haman became Prime Minister of Persia; he hated Mordecai and because of him he hated all Jews.

Harnan made a plan Lo destroy the Je\\S of Persia. For this he needed the consent ol' the Emperor: \\ho gave him his signet ring thus cmpo\\ering him Lo sign all decrees.

The Feast of Esther.

The J e\\ s of Sbushan-the capital of Persja-fasted and prayed. Mordecai begged Esther to plead with her royal hus- band for her people. Esther feared for her own life. lmt she nevertheless invited Ahasuern" and Haman to a feast at which --he fell before the king and declared that

it ~was her om1 pPople whom Haman meant

After that \Iordecai v. as appointed by the Emperor as prime minister in place of Haman. The order that had been given, however, could not be changed, for it had on it the seal of the king. But he issued another order giving the Jews the right to defend thf'msrlves against their enemies. many of '' hoP1 '' crf' killed.
