Research Instrument

The questions in the instrument were drafted in English, but interviews were conducted in Tshivenda as not all caregivers were comfortable with English.

Pre-testing

Trustworthiness…

  • Credibility
  • Transferability
  • Dependability
  • Conformability

Once the data were collected, the researcher played the tape and read the field notes to confirm that the responses were in line with the study objectives, and follow-up interviews were conducted to confirm responses that were not well understood by the researcher. The researcher then examined the findings of the previous research to assess the degree to which the results of the study were consistent with those of past studies to ensure credibility. Transferability was ensured by providing baseline data to establish the context of the study.

The researcher ensured that the findings and conclusions were useful for other settings and populations, not just the Vhembe district. In addition, the description of the challenges faced by SBR caregivers is detailed in each SBR. The researcher had the help of an independent coder to analyze data and discuss findings.

The researcher used written field notes and a tape recorder to confirm that the data collected met the objectives. The researcher assured that the findings of the study are the result of the challenges faced by the CBR caregiver in Vhembe district and their ideas, not the preferences of the researcher.

Data collection methods

The researcher then suggested that the caregivers be the ones to suggest a suitable day and time for the meeting. However, caregivers were made clear that they have the right to withdraw from the study at any time and will not be required to disclose a reason to the researcher. Caregivers were also encouraged to be open from the beginning of the sessions, with the aim of building rapport in the opening moments.

Therefore, the caregivers said that there was no right or wrong answer to the questions. Interviews took place at CBR centers in Vhembe District and were self-suggested by the caregivers. An audio recorder was used to capture the interview with the caregivers' permission, but not with all caregivers.

Guardians were told their rights and shown the stop button so they could stop recording if they didn't want the information they provided to be recorded. However, interviews were interrupted when caregivers did not provide new information and when they said they had no other information.

Method of Data analysis

  • Phase 1: Familiarizing yourself with your data
  • Phase 2: Generating initial codes
  • Phase 3: Searching for themes
  • Phase 4: Reviewing themes
  • Phase 5: Defining and naming themes
  • Phase 6: Producing the report

The researcher then sorted the different codes into potential themes and collected all relevant coded data extracts within the identified themes. The researcher began to analyze codes and consider how different codes can be combined to form an overarching theme. The researcher reads all the fragments collected for each theme and considers whether they seem to form a coherent pattern.

The candidate themes seemed to form a coherent pattern, after which the researcher concentrated on re-reading the entire dataset to see if the themes worked in relation to the dataset. The researcher defined and refined the themes presented for analysis and analyzed the data within them. The researcher went back to collected data extracts for each theme and organized them into a cohesive and internally consistent report, with an accompanying story.

The researcher then submitted the analyzed data to peer review, an independent coder, supervisors for evaluation, and a proofreader for language editing prior to producing the report. The researcher had a set of fully developed themes and sub-themes which include final analysis and report writing.

Ethical considerations

  • Permission to conduct the study
  • Voluntary participation
  • Informed consent form
  • Protection of participants
  • Confidentiality and Anonymity
  • Rejection of any form of plagiarism

The researcher briefed the purpose, objectives and significance of the study for informed decision making to caregivers. If the caregiver showed emotional distress during the interview, the researcher would stop the interview. The researcher also applied this ethical consideration to prevent harm to caregivers by not discussing issues that may have made them feel uncomfortable.

While the caregivers were signing the information sheet and informed consent, they used their real names and made sure that those forms will be kept in a safe place where no one can see them except the supervisors. The guardians were also assured that any information they provided would not be disclosed to anyone and their names would not be published or mentioned in the dissertation or anywhere else. One of the main ethical principles of scientific publishing is to acknowledge the sources of others.

In this way, the researcher referred to all consulted sources, either directly or indirectly, who had made a significant contribution to this study. The researcher adhered to this ethical issue throughout the study by ensuring that all journals, books, articles and other sources of information were acknowledged, both in text and in full references.

Introduction

Study findings

  • Profile of CBR caregivers
  • Summary of findings from CBR caregivers
    • Theme 1: Poor relationships between caregivers, government
    • Theme 2: Unavailability of material and human resources
    • Theme 3: Poor funding system
    • Theme 4: Caregiver’s well-being
    • Theme 5: Training and education
    • Theme 6: Coping strategies

CBR carers indicated that they find it difficult to have good relationships with families where people with disabilities come from. Lack of intervention from public authorities. a) Subtheme 1: Lack of cooperation from families of people with disabilities. Some people with disabilities are locked up by their guardians for that matter.

CBR carers did not see it as an easy task to work with family members of persons with disabilities. The well-being of many persons with disabilities is not well protected due to the lack of funding of SBRs. The findings of this study revealed that caring for persons with disabilities has an impact on the well-being of most CBR carers.

This enabled CBR carers to provide a wider level of assistance to people with disabilities. Other relatives are motivated by the choice they made to help people with disabilities. I am always motivated to make sure that the needs of people with disabilities are met.”

Talking is also one of the coping strategies used by carers of persons with disabilities.

Summary

Informal sources of support such as friends and religious groups and the use of care services reduce stress in caregivers of people with disabilities.

Introduction

Summary of the study

Data were collected through in-depth individual interviews to allow community rehabilitation carers to express freely and without restriction the challenges they face in caring for people with special needs. This could help them in formulating strategies that could help them and also the lives of disabled people. The researcher recommends that community members and families should play a role in ensuring that the needs of people with disabilities are met by supporting CBR caregivers and also participate in implementation.

Policymakers should design a compensation plan for CBR caregivers of persons with disabilities as a way to show appreciation for their contributions to the health care system. Government departments should recognize CBR caregivers as partners in providing primary health care for people with disabilities at the community level. Limitation of the study

Conclusions

This study pointed out that CBR carers face several challenges and some of them still continue to care for people with disabilities even though they are there. Therefore, the intervention of various stakeholders such as public authorities, family members of persons with disabilities and local community members is needed in order to solve or minimize the challenges of CBR caregivers.

Recommendations

  • Recommendations for community
  • Recommendations for policy
  • Recommendations for government departments
  • Recommendations for future researchers

There should also be a policy framework or law drafted with the aim of protecting CBR carers, as there is a law on the protection of persons with disabilities.
