September 2011, Vol. 101, No. 9 SAMJ The Spotted Eagle-Owl Bubo africanus is the
most common owl in southern Africa, occurring in a wide variety of habitats. It has also adapted to an urban environment, where it breeds on buildings and in nest-boxes put in place to attract it. At dusk, the melodious hooting calls of a pair will reveal their presence as they set off to hunt.
Their varied diet includes arthropods, small mammals and birds; their prey preference in a particular area may be established by examining their regurgitated pellets. The young often leave the nest prematurely and, when they are on the ground, the parents may attack passing humans and dogs.
