capense is superficially similar to the Pearl-spotted Owlet but is larger and lacks the distinctive pearl spotting of its close relative. Although the two species may occur in the same habitat, the African Barred Owlet is usually found in denser woodland, mainly along rivers where there are large trees. Very little is known about its breeding biology except that it lays its eggs in a natural hole in a tree.

Its call is a mournful repetitive krrooo krrooo krrooo…, emitted at night and sometimes during the day. Little has been recorded about its diet except that it preys mostly on insects which are captured by pouncing from a perch.
