Mr. Michael Cherniavsky has arrived in Capetown from Johannesburg to await the arrival of his brother and sister-in-law, Mr.

Mrs. Mischel Cherniavsky will arrive in South Africa from England in October.

Colonel Hon,rich and Mrs. Horwich sailed la. t Friday for South Africa in the "War- wick Castle" after a holiday in Great Britain.

• ir David Hanis, who has been on a visit to England, sailed on his return to South Africa in the "Warwick Castle" on Friday last from Southampton.

The marriage will take place of Goldie Ruth, eldest daughter of Mr. J. Rudolph and the late Mrs. Rudolph, of P1·etoria, and Alter, elder son of Mr. and Mrs. M. Zai- del, also of Pretoria. on Sunday, September 23, at 10.30 a.m., at the Pretoria Syna- gogue.

Mr. Adv. Morris Alexander, M.P., the well-known Capetowi.1 communal worker, is leaving on September 28th on the s.s.

"Anchises" for Australia, on a holiday trip of several months duration.

Whilst away he will take the opportunity of attending many of the functions in con- nection with the centenary celebrations to be held in Melbourne. Mr. Alexander in- tends also to acquaint himself with the life and conditions of the Jewish communities in Australia, ·

The good wishes of friends and admirers throughout the country will go with Mr.

Alexander on his well-desened and much- needed holiday.

MR. PHILLIP MACHANIK Mr. Phillip Machanik has received noti- fication of his appointment a Staff En- gineer at the Head Office of the Depart- ment of Posts and Telegraphs Pretoria. l\fr.

Machanik has for a number of years been in charge of the development work relating to long distance communication in the Union. He is proceeding to the United States of America in January next, having received a Carnegie Grant to investigate communications and broadcasting problems.

Both Mr. and Mrs. Machanik are well- known and loyal Zionist worker . Mr.

Machanik will be receiving the congratula- tions of a large circle of friends upon his new appointment.

The engagement is announced between Isabel, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H.

Schlapobersky, of "Elibank," Park Street, Belgravin, and William, srcond son of Mr.

and Mr .. R. Oshry, of YeoYille. Both of Johannesburg.

Mr. Leon Levson, who ha~ spent the past six months on a visit to England and the Continent, from which he reached Capetown last week, returned to Johannesburg on Sunday.

The engagement is announced of Lilian, eldest dau.g-hter of Mr. and l\Irs. L New- man, of Windhoek, S.W..A., and Joe Frank, of Marienthal S.W.A. youngest son of Mr.

and Mrs S. Frank of Capetown, formerly of Vilna (Poland).

MR. & MRS. SAM GOLDSTEIN.

Mr. and Mrs. Sam Goldstein, of Cape- town, celebrated a few days ago the silver anniversary of their wedding and were the recipients of many congratulatory messages and good wishes. They were married at Stepney Synagogue, London, but immedi- ately afterwards Mr. and Mrs. Goldstein set sail for South Africa, where they have spent their married life and where they gained for themselves much deserved popularity from a large circle of friends.

In last week's issue we announced that Mr. B. Kroll had been elected Mayor of Jacobsdal, O.F.S. This was an error as the announcement should have read that Mr.

Kroll had been elected Councillor of Jacobsdal.

nited King- dom, was last Friday the guest of honour at a farewell party given by the Mayor of Benoni, Mr. M.. Nestadt.

Mr. Phillips, one of the mo. t popular Jewish figures on the East Rand, has been prominently identified with Zioni t work, as well as with every welfare movement affecting the community at large. On be- half of the people of Benoni, the Mayor ex- pressed his appreciation of Mr. Phillips' activities in the various branches of com- munal life, and presented him with a gift, which, he said, was only a small indication of the great esteem in which i\Ir. Phillip · was held.
