Re: Cardiometabolic markers to identify cardiovascular disease risk in HIV infected South Africans of African descent
Would you accept the above mentioned article to be considered for publication in SAMJ. The material has not been submitted for publication elsewhere and there is no conflict of interest whatsoever.
Our article should be published in SAMJ because: Partial least square discriminant analysis, which is normally used in the analysis of Metabolomic data, was employed where multiple risk factors were taken in consideration. South Africans of African descent normally have a normal lipid profile despite underlying components of the metabolic syndrome. However with HIV infection, the results showed cut-off values of clinical importance. A TG:HDL ratio ≥1.49, TC:HDL ratio ≥5.4 and a HDL level ≤0.76 mmol/L indicated risk for the development of CVD in a cohort of Africans in the North West Province of South Africa. The results have important health implications for Africans living with HIV, as the lipid levels may be a useful indicator of the risk for the development of CVD in clinical settings.
