The phenomenon of grandparents raising their grandchildren is not new in several parts of the world. This study aimed to explore grandmothers' experiences in raising their grandchildren in Thohoyandou.

Background of the study

Who are grandparents raising their grandchildren?

2 The records of the General Household Survey conducted by the South African Human Rights Commission and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) in 2011 show that in South Africa only one in three children live with both biological parents, and 61% of children who do not live with either the parents, live with their grandparents (Kelley, Whitley & Campos, 2010: Louw also emphasizes that parenting in South Africa has long been characterized by the presence of multiple caregivers and the involvement of wide kinship networks in the lives of children, both with and without living parents With the importance of the role that the extended family plays in African culture, it is not surprising that grandparents are the most important category of caregiver, besides the actual biological parents of a child, to assume the responsibility of caring and raising children in South Africa (Louw, 2013).

Global trends on grandmothers raising their grandchildren

Moreover, the improving health and longevity of grandparents, coupled with the worsening socio-economic conditions in South Africa, are likely to increase the reliance on grandparents (particularly grandmothers) as caregivers (Louw, 2013). In South Africa, for example, more than 80% of children whose biological parents do not live in the same household live with their grandparents (Stats SA, 2012).

Problem statement

Harper and Ruchieva (2004) report that women have stronger social and psychological roles as family caregivers and 'kinship keepers' with a greater commitment to maintaining the family lineage, thus grandmothers assume the role of caregivers in most societies, especially in Africa. their grandchildren. This study aims to explore grandmothers' experiences of raising their grandchildren in Thohoyandou, Thulamela Municipality in Limpopo Province.

Rationale for the study

The rising unemployment rate (Holborn & Eddy, 2011), the increase in drug and alcohol abuse, the level and extent of poverty in South Africa have all been identified as contributing factors. 5 documented study of grandmothers' experiences of raising their grandchildren in the context of Thohoyandou Thulamela Municipality, Vhembe District in Limpopo Province, South Africa.

In the general population, according to Kelly et al. 2013), stress is associated with a host of negative health outcomes that may affect the quality of care provided to the grandchildren.

Coping mechanisms of grandmothers raising their grandchildren

Financial coping mechanism

15 grandmothers, especially when some grandmothers have to either postpone or neglect their own health care needs to attend to the more pressing needs of their grandchild/children (Clottey, 2015). Furthermore, Phetlhu and Watson (2014) reveal that some grandmothers also receive support from their relatives and employers (for the working grandmothers, who are few) in the form of provision of food, clothes and money.

Exclusion criteria

Method for data collection

The use of an interview guide was to ensure that the objectives of the study were covered during data collection. The interview guide served as a guide for the interviewer in order to ensure reliable and comparable qualitative data (Cohen & Crabtree, 2006).

Data collection method

Prior to the interview process, the purpose, specific objectives, and interview technique of the study were explained to the trained professional interviewer.

Pre-test

Data Management and Analysis

The researcher was satisfied with the thematic map of her data and each coded theme was accompanied by an operational definition that allowed for clarity and identification of what aspect of the data each theme captured. The article provided sufficient evidence of the themes within the data in other documents to ensure that there is a concise, coherent, logical, non-repetitive and accurate account of the story of the data, within and across the themes.

Measures to ensure Trustworthiness

Credibility

Detailed description of the procedures used in the collection, recording and analysis of data is provided in this study; this procedure is also known as 'audit trial' (Leitz & Zayas, 2010). By providing such details, other researchers will be able to duplicate and judge the soundness of the research (Hanson et al., 2011).

Transferability

Reliability refers to the degree to which research findings are consistent over time and can be reproduced by another researcher (Petty et al., 2012).

Confirmability

Ethical Considerations

  • Permission to conduct the study
  • Informed Consent
  • Confidentiality
  • Protection of participants

The research proposal was submitted to the Higher Degrees Committee (HDC) of the School of Health Sciences at the University of Venda, and the University Committee for Higher Degrees for approval and quality control. A consent form was issued to each participant before the start of the study to ensure that they all participated in the study of their own free will and knew what they were getting themselves into.

Dissemination of results

For the purpose of this study, the issue of anonymity was taken into account by the researcher through the use of pseudonames to maintain confidentiality (Alston & Bowels, 2003). The researcher ensured that no physical, psychological, or emotional harm was caused to the participants.

Summary

The researcher asked questions in an appropriate and non-judgmental manner in order to avoid causing anxiety or creating discomfort during and after the interview process.

Summary of the chapter

According to the literature (Zauszniewski et al., 2012; Musil et al., 2009; Bohman et al., 2007; Oburu & Palmerus, 2005), grandmother caregivers' coping strategies help reduce the negative consequences of caregiving. thus promoting the well-being of the grandmother, together with the grandchild. Grandchildren and being overly burdened with their care responsibilities, leading to stress, may mean that the resilience of grandmother caregivers may be underestimated, especially when protective factors are relevant for grandmothers who, for example, raise their grandchildren, receive help and support from others and are optimistic are. exist in difficult situations (Dolbin-MacNab et al., 2013). This is because the availability of social support is considered most beneficial for grandparents with higher levels of stress, encouraging positive grandparenting outcomes (Gerard et al., 2006).

  • Feeling towards role change
  • Socio-economic factors that affect grandmothers raising their grandchildren

Conclusions

While grandmothers worry about how to provide for the daily needs of their families, about the future of their grandchildren when they are gone, about the lifestyles of their own children, and grieve over the deaths of their own children, their psycho-emotional and physical health seriously disturbed. affected. Grandmothers worry about the future of their grandchildren and this can negatively affect their well-being.

It is also recommended that Vhembe District Department of Health and Social Development should work with Thohoyandou block J Civic heads to establish support groups that will guide grandmothers on how to manage the stressful situations.

Indications for further research

It is recommended that social workers also guide grandmothers in taking all necessary steps to ensure that every child under their care has access to child benefit.
