Avocados are very sensitive to low storage temperatures, especially if associated with low relative humidity in the storage atmosphere. Optimum storage temperature is also a function of fruit maturity (oil or dry matter content) and physiological stage of development. Ripe fruit picked early in the season is much more susceptible to low storage temperatures and is best stored at 7.5ºC.

A drop in supply air temperature (DAT) is recommended approximately 7 to 10 days after intake. The return air temperature (RAT) must always be within 1.5ºC of the DAT. DAT should be decreased by 0.5ºC, if RAT increases to more than 1.5ºC of DAT.

STEP-BY-STEP MANUAL FOR SA EXPORTERS OF FRESH PRODUCTS

ACRONYMS AND ABBREVIATIONS

INTRODUCTION

WHY THIS MANUAL?

USING THE MANUAL

REGISTRATION WITH SARS AS AN EXPORTER OR IMPORTER

PRODUCTION REGISTRATION

Registration as a Food Business Operator (FBO)

Phytosanitary registration and approval for special markets

STEP-BY-STEP MANUAL FOR SA EXPORTERS OF FRESH PRODUCTS exporters must obtain the official phytosanitary import requirements of the country to which they want to export

  • Special market phytosanitary registration
  • Application of GAPs for phytosanitary registration
  • INSPECTION OF ORCHARDS
  • INSPECTION AND CERTIFICATION SERVICES FOR SPECIAL MARKETS INCLUDING THE EUROPEAN UNION (EU) AND OTHER INTERNATIONAL MARKETS
    • Phytosanitary inspections for special markets including the EU
    • Inspections for exports to the EU

After applying for the phytosanitary registration of an orchard or packaging, the relevant unit will be inspected. For the inspection of registered orchards and packaging for specific markets, the contact details are the same as for the inspection of orchards as above. Fresh fruit exported to the European Union (EU) must be checked for compliance with EU marketing standards for quality and labeling before being allowed to be cleared for free circulation by customs in any EU member state.

Certain countries, including South Africa, are certified by the EU as having a Recognized Inspection Service. This means that South Africa can produce its own certificates of conformity which are accepted as proof of conformity with EU marketing standards. South African fruit entering the EU markets therefore does not have to undergo quality control on arrival at the EU ports of destination.

Fresh fruit covered by EU marketing standards are: apples, apricots, avocados, cherries, clementines, grapes, kiwis, lemons, tangerines, melons, nectarines, oranges, peaches, pears, plums, satsumas, strawberries and watermelons.

  • Citrus fruit from South Africa to Iran Citrus types allowed in Iran
  • Citrus fruit to the USA Citrus types allowed in the USA

Very important: Exporters must obtain and forward an official import confirmation from Iran, either a license or an official communication (written in Persian) to a translator. Currently 30 magisterial districts in the Western Cape, namely Bellville, Bredasdorp, Caledon, Cape, Ceres, Clanwilliam, Goodwood, Grabouw, Heidelberg, Hermanus, Hopefield, Kuils River, Ladismith, Malmesbury, Mitchells Plain, Montagu, Moorreesburg, Paarl, Piketberg, Robertson , Somerset West, Stellenbosch, Strand, Swellendam, Tulbagh, Villiersdorp, Vredenburg, Wellington, Worcester and Wynberg, and two Northern Cape Magisterial Districts (Hartswater and Warrenton) have been officially approved as CBS Free Areas.

PHYTOSANITARY DOCUMENTATION REQUIRED FOR EXPORTS

GUIDELINE FOR COMPLETION OF PHYTOSANITARY REGISTRATION FORMS

  • General considerations
  • Specific principles and guidelines for preparation and issue of a phytosanitary certificate
  • Completing the phytosanitary certificate

The phytosanitary certificate is the original document that accompanies the shipment and is presented to the competent officials upon arrival in the importing country. Official annexes to the phytosanitary certificate should be limited to those where the information required to complete the certificate exceeds the available space on the certificate. The phytosanitary certificate states in the relevant section that the information is contained in an appendix (e.g. according to the attached list).

In the case of fresh citrus fruits destined for export to the European Union and if a consignment consists of two or more PUCs, an addendum with the details must be attached to the phytosanitary certificate. The appendix may not contain any information that would not appear on the phytosanitary certificate itself. Official annexes to the phytosanitary certificate may only be used if the information exceeds the space provided on the phytosanitary certificate.

In the case of exports of fresh fruit to Japan and the USA in bulk vessels, the phytosanitary certificate must be on board/vessel.
