Chapter Three
ISLAM AND IllV/AIDS
Fasting, especially during the holy month of Rarnatjan, can play a role in the holistic approach of an HIV I AIDS prevention program. For the secularists, IllY/AIDS is a serious inconvenience in the sexual revolution of their way of life.
Chapter Four
MUSLIM INITIATIVES
THE ISLAMIC MEDICAL ASSOCIATION OF SOUTH AFRICA
On the occasion of the International AIDS Conference 13111, IMA reprinted two booklets for distribution during the conference. In September 1997, the IMA in Gauteng launched a Muslim HIV/AIDS program by enlisting the help and involvement of Islamic Careline and Jamiatul Ulama and establishing the Muslim AIDS Committee (MAC). The first three-day Train-a-Trainer workshop in K waZulu-Natal was held at the IMA office in Durban in July 1999 and was led by a member from MAC.
At the end of the training period, each participant qualifies as an AIDS educator and receives a certificate. In June 2002, members of the MAC introduced the first three-day train-the-trainer workshop in the Western Cape.
MUSLIM AIDS COMMI'ITEE (MAC)
How can MV be detected if a visitor shows no symptoms of infection? . g) The solution (Islamic response). The health needs of the center's residents are the responsibility of the Gauteng IMA. At the end of the six sessions, students are encouraged to sign a pledge of abstinence.
It is part of the AIDS Consortium which is an umbrella body of national and international AIDS organizations. The Muslim community's awareness of the AIDS pandemic has been significantly increased by the above efforts.
MUSLIM YOUTH MOVEMENT OF SOUTH AFRICA
It seems that many people share the view that abstinence is the only approach to take to stem the tide of mv I AIDS. Its IDV/AIDS program began in June 1999 when it sent two of its delegates to the IMA KwaZulu-Natal AIDS Awareness Workshop at their Durban office. The author strongly recommended the leadership of the Muslim youth movement to revive this activity as it rendered a valuable service to the rural communities.
At the request of the hospital administration, Gibanje feeds sick/AIDS patients once a week when they come to collect their medicine. He also gave these outpatients a food hamper worth Ran 80 for the Christmas period (December 2002). All these patients were non-Muslims from the Zulu-speaking community.
WAQFUL WAQIFINFOUNDATION
Callers have the right to make an appointment to discuss their concerns with an adviser at the institute's offices, which are based in Pietermaritzburg. Members of the foundation realized that there was a need for them to be trained in. In September 1999, a workshop on mY/AIDS was initiated for the general public.
The life skills program is also implemented in Pietermaritzburg with students, adults, institutional staff, volunteer counselors from the foundation and inmates at the Howick halfway house centre. It is envisaged that this campaign will also be repeated for the December 2003 party with the participation of the foundation.83.
THE MUSLIM SEAMEN INSTITUTE
The foundation participated in this campaign and raised most of the funds and goods from the Muslim community and the rest from the public. It distributes soaps, cotton wool, jik, Vaseline and food packets to AIDS orphans and their families.84 The foundation works closely with various other organizations in IllV I AIDS awareness and prevention. stationed in the port of Durban. In March 2001, the institute began its mv/AIDS awareness programs when its president qualified as an AIDS educator after attending the three-day mv I AIDS training program of the IMA in K waZulu Natal.
The program is essentially a speech given on HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention to all seafarers on board, regardless of rank, race, religion and language. To date (September 2003), over six thousand seven hundred (6700) seafarers have been empowered with knowledge on HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention.87 The Institute works in consultation with IMA on AIDS awareness and prevention programs.
POSITIVE MUSLIMS
Some of the officers are researching this topic and have a more detailed discussion about this when they meet the president of the Institute next. It was agreed at that meeting to make it a quarterly event; to develop an Internet discussion list; and that all researchers must provide basic information about their work to the office for their records and the website. ii) Webscan - to scan the Internet web for all references to HIV/AIDS and Muslim Islam with the aim of categorizing them with a short paragraph on the important websites. iii) HIV Prevalent Studies Project - a research on IllV I AIDS prevalence in the Muslim community to form a basis for offering intervention strategies within the Muslim community. iv) Fagbmeda Miller scholarship - this is in honor of the courage of Ms F. Those who wish to remain anonymous also use this service. iii) Other forms of counseling include home visits for moral and personal support; clinic visits; and prison visits when a member of the support group is incarcerated. iv) Develop a "buddy" system (a one-on-one friend who will be on an ongoing basis) and provide spiritual support.
On February 4, 2003, the organization hosted a workshop led by a visitor from the Quilt Making Project from the USA on the various therapeutic effects of quilting and as an educational and awareness tool. The organization lobbies all relevant structures, both in government and civil society, especially among the Muslim religious leadership, for greater support for people with AIDS and a deeper awareness of the need for openness and empathy.
SISTER HANIEFA B. ALLEE
In February 1998 she was employed as day manager of the Chatsworth Child and Family Welfare Society. At the back of the pledge is printed a poem titled "What AIDS Can't", which she has. While working for the garment industry, she had initiated an annual AIDS Awareness Day for World AIDS Day from 1994 to 1997 in all five factories under the management of the South African Garment Industry.
As part of the World AIDS Day program, five thousand leaflets were distributed to the public. The half-day program of "open doors" at the clinics takes place once a year for each of the four clinics and includes for the general public: 107.
MS FIONA KHAN
In March 2001, the Nelson R Mandela School of Medicine at the University of Natal initiated an MV I AIDS program for their first year students as part of the curriculum for the first time. In August 2002, she delivered a general workshop on emotional intelligence and AIDS for students at the Durban Institute of Technology. The Imam, as a respected leader in the community and head of the mosque, is the recognized teacher and model for social behavior within the Muslim community.
The workshop curriculum was provided by the Ministry of Health, with special adjustments for the Muslim community based on the findings of the Baseline Survey. IMAU provides training in the use of the AIDS Education Curriculum to 24 supervisors in each district.

OTHER RELIGIOUS RESPONSES TO IHV/AIDS
DIAKONIA COUNCIL OF CHURCHES
The organization meets with individual coordinators in their communities and organizes regular bi-monthly meetings for all coordinators to exchange information and ideas. The organization prepares a World AIDS Day liturgy of about fifteen pages for all churches on its mailing list, namely 376 pastors. A workshop will be held with the clergy before the liturgy is distributed so that the ministers can receive information on how to successfully lead the World AIDS Day service.
As part of the AIDS program, workshops on important topics such as obtaining social assistance; personal documents etc. This publication is distributed to all AIDS coordinators, the AIDS Advisory Committee and people involved in the work with InV/AIDS.s.

This is done by inviting to discuss the important actors of the issue in question, for example, officials of Internal Affairs, Social Welfare, etc. in current affairs that focus on the media; prayer; information on how the church can be involved in InV/AIDS; upcoming events and current publications of Diakonia. One of the divisions of the Center is the Ramakrishna Clinic which was established at the Center in 1959 in Durban.
