Klerksdorp Midweek, Klerks- dorp - Motorists travelling in the North West are urged to exercise caution when stopping next to the road or when ordered to stop by other motorists as they could be po- tential hijackers.
SAPS in North West issued this warning after a few incidents were reported where vehicles were hi- jacked.
Capt Afjee Botma, police spokes- person, said one hijacking occurred in Kanana on Thursday July 22.
“It happened at about 15:30 near
Kanana. A 39-year-old man was driving from Klerksdorp where he bought stock for his tuck shop. After he entered Kanana over the bridge, two men got out of a black Volks- wagen Polo that was parked next to the road and threatened him with firearms.
“Upon stopping, one of the men opened the door, but the driver ma- naged to escape by running away and the suspects drove off with his Nissan van with stock,’’ she said.
In an unrelated incident on the same day, a 55-year-old victim was
driving in Boitekong in a white Mazda Drifter. He alleged that two unknown males approached him at the Engen Garage and offered money to him to help them load fire wood in the bushes in Bospoort.
They all drove together in the vic- tim’s vehicle. However, the driver was ultimately attacked and robbed of his pistol, two cell phones and money.
They tied the victim to a tree, took his vehicle and fled the scene. The victim was assisted by security of- ficers who took him to the police
Klerksdorp Midweek Klerksdorp - Three students from communities within Maquassi Hills and Matlosana Local Municipality have been awarded scholarships, as beneficiaries of Boko- moso Solar’s Scholarship Fund.
All three are currently studying either engineering or education at tertiary institutions across the country, fully supported by this fund.
This Scholarship Fund, which exclusively targets learners from communities in these specific municipal areas, was launched in 2020, aimed at providing oppor- tunities to matriculants wishing to study at tertiary institutions.
Unlike most other programmes, students don’t need to contend against learners from other com- munities, making it a fantastic opportunity to fulfil a dream of studying after school.
The solar project’s Socio-Eco- nomic Development Programme
prioritises youth and education, and views access to scholarships for community youth as a chance for young people to grasp a chance to fulfil their academic aspirations.
“It’s important to provide an opportunity to youth to develop themselves academically and to experience life away from home, which will give them experience to be able to navigate different environments, once they have completed their studies and move into the work area. Scholar-
ships additionally give hope to students, espe- cially from disadvantaged areas, as they learn that their background does not necessarily define them and that they can action their dreams,” said Tshepo Kgoloane, Community Operations Manager for Boka- moso Solar, who explained that the quality of applications, clearly demonstrated a thirst for education amongst community youth.
One such student, Boitumelo Pooe, from Maquassi Hill Lo- cal Municipality, is one of the three scholarship recipients. She is studying towards her BED Senior Phase, at the Free State University. “The scholarship has enabled me to further my studies and helped my family not to worry about my future. Without it, I wouldn’t have been able to register. So qualifying was the best thing that could have hap- pened to me,” said Boitumelo.
She added, saying, “My dream is to pass and graduate so that I can take care of my family, once I’m financially stable. Plus, I would also like to start an organisation which will enable me to give back to my community, by providing food and care for the less fortunate.”
Bokamoso Solar Scholarship Fund, is awarded to successful applicants who qualify to study an undergraduate degree or National Diploma at a recognized University or TVET College.

On Friday July 23, a 38-year- old lady was driving from Ouka- sie Location to Brits to pick up her husband. She stopped the vehicle, but was approached by three armed men. They threat- ened to shoot her when one of the men pulled her out of the vehicle and they drove off with it.
“Motorists are requested to ex- ercise caution when stopped by unknown persons and to report such incidents to the nearest po- lice station. If stopped by Police of Traffic officials and you feel unsafe/threatened, put on your hazard lights and slowly drive to the nearest police station. Never ever offer a lift to a hitch-hiker and do not stop next to the road except for an emergency. People stopping to relieve themselves have also fallen victim of this crime,” Capt Botma said.
AS PART OF CURBING SUCH INCIDENTS, MO- TORISTS ARE REQUEST-
ED TO TAKE HEED AND APPLY THE FOLLOWING
SAFETY HINTS:
A well-maintained car is less likely to break down and leave you vulnerable.
Plan your route and let some- one know what your route is and when to expect you at your des- tination.
Always check the rear view mirror to see if you are being fol- lowed.
Avoid driving with your win- dows open and keep the doors
locked and put all valuables out of sight.
Avoid distractions while dri- ving such as using a cell phone.
If you suspect you are being followed, drive to your nearest police station or a busy public area.
When approaching a red traffic light, slow down so that you only reach it when it turns green especially during the night.
If possible, park in a central, well-lit place, preferably with guards on duty.
When stopping behind an- other vehicle, leave half a vehicle length in front so you can make an emergency escape if neces- sary.
Avoid driving through unfa- miliar areas.
Avoid driving late at night / early hours of the morning when the roads are quiet.
Drive in the centre lane away from pedestrians where possible.
If possible, never drive alone.
Never follow routine routes when driving; change on a regu- lar basis.
If possible, avoid driving in the dark.
Hijackers may stage a mi- nor accident. If your vehicle is bumped from behind and you do not feel comfortable with the individual involved in the situa- tion, indicate he / she must fol- low you and drive to the nearest Police Station or any busy public area for help.

Nancy Drew is back
Nancy Drew is a brilliant teenaged detec- tive whose sense of self comes from solving mysteries in her hometown of Horseshoe Bay, Maine - until her mother’s untimely death derails Nancy’s college plans.
This detective series starts on M-Net
at 20:30 on Saturday July 31.
Devastated by her mother’s passing, Nancy swears off crime- solving while crossing off the days until she can re-apply to college.
But when a socialite is murdered, Nancy finds herself a prime sus- pect in the crime, along with a group of other teens present at the scene:
Nancy’s nemesis from high school, George Fan; a rich girl with a mys- terious past, Bess Marvin; Nancy’s secret boyfriend, Ned “Nick” Nicker- son, and amiable burnout Ace.
The five of them must team up to clear their own names - encounte- ring emotional entanglements and even more mysteries along the way.
Nancy’s reawakening brings her into conflict with her widowed father, Carson Drew. And, when a superna- tural presence begins to haunt Nan- cy’s investigation, she discovers that the current crime has an astonishing connection to the unsolved murder of a local girl.
Whether the ghost is here to help or hinder Nancy remains to be seen, but one thing’s for sure: Nancy’s going to have to unravel the clues from both the living and the dead to solve the crimes.

Nancy Drew, the brilliant teenaged detective, is back on M-Net.
Klerksdorp Midweek, Klerksdorp - President Cyril Ramaphosa has announced that South Africa’s vaccine rollout will open for people aged 18 to 34 from Septem- ber 1.
This age group can already register to get the vaccine.
Vaccine sites will also open for walk-ins, he said, where people will be able to present themselves without an appointment, and they will be registered and vacci- nated then and there. He did not provide a start date for walk-ins.
The president said that while the vaccine strategy Klerksdorp Midweek, Klerksdorp - Life Anncron,
Sunningdale and Wilmed Park hospitals in partnership with NWDOH (North West Department of Health), have combined efforts to establish the Wilkoppies Vaccina- tion Site.
The site is part of the government-accredited vaccina- tion sites actively administering vaccines to members of the public who have registered on the government EVDS for vaccination. The site is located opposite Wilmed Park hospital.
According to Lukas Greeve, Life Anncron hospital manager, the hospitals manage this vaccination site joint- ly. People should register on the EVDS and will receive a SMS notification providing the date and vaccination site that they should visit.
Walk-ins (those who did register on the EVDS, but did not receive a SMS indicating the vaccination site name and date) will also be assisted in receiving vaccinations.
Please take not of the following important aspects:
q Individuals with scheduled SMS appointments may receive priority over unscheduled walk-ins.
q The site uses vaccine stock as supplied by the De- partment of Health. Walk-ins will not be accepted if stock levels are low.
q The site has the capacity to do a certain amount of vaccinations per hour.
q The Wilkoppies vaccination site is a service provided in collaboration with government and hospitals may be obliged to pause the vaccination programme at any point should the anticipated supply of vaccines not materialize or be delivered by the government’s vaccine suppliers.
Documentation you need to take with you to the Wilkoppies Vaccination Site: Proof of EVDS registra- tion (SMS), ID card/book, medical scheme details (if applicable) and vaccination record/card (for the second vaccination).
“You will be asked to give your consent to be vaccinated and be advised of the vaccination process and potential side effects. After being vaccinated, you will be asked to wait in a waiting area for 15 minutes to be monitored for any reactions. If you have experienced any adverse events after leaving the vaccination site, please report to the Adverse Events Following Immunisation system at [email protected] or call 071 302 8949,” he said.
Klerksdorp Midweek, Klerksdorp - The vaccination is a safe and sim- ple way to strengthen our immune responses against the SARS-CoV-2 virus.

Young people to register for vaccinations
has ramped up in the last few weeks and has made ‘huge strides’, there is still room for improvement.
He noted that the country is currently administering 240 000 vaccines every weekday - a month ago, the figure stood at around 100 000, he said. The goal, however, is to get to 300 000 doses administered every weekday.
This will be accomplished by increasing vaccination sites, improving the registration system, and boosting vaccination capacity over weekends.
In the next two to three months, 31 million additional doses from Pfizer and Johnson & Johnson will be delivered, and sourcing vaccines from other producers is also under- way, Ramaphosa said.
“This supply pipeline means that there will be sufficient vaccine doses available for the rest of the year.”
As of Sunday July 25, 6.3 million vaccines have been ad- ministered nationally, equating to over 10% of the popula- tion receiving a vaccine dose.
“While there is ample supply of vaccines for the short term, we must ensure that this supply is delivered on time and without disruption,” the president said.
It is also important to monitor the emergence of new va- riants and to secure access to future vaccines that are adap- ted to these variants,” Ramaphosa stressed.
The Department of Health updated its Covid-19 vaccina- tion targets for South Africa earlier this week, and aims to have 35 million people jabbed by Christmas.
